Prompt Writing
Tue Sep 8, 2015 23:02

I feel that prompt writing boxes students in and creates anxiety about writing. We want students to be so well rounded so that they can write about any topic the teacher puts up. But the reality is that if the students cannot connect with the prompt or see the purpose in the assignment then the writing is not creative and it is shallow and just completion of the task at hand. And thats from students that actually cared enough to complete the assignment. While others start to hate writing and will not practice it or even try it when it is presented as a form to express themselves. I feel that it truly is an art form that must develop over time and practice. Students cannot develop the automaticity with the interconnected processes unless they practice and grapple through the processes often. I am so glad that we are viewing writing instruction in a different light. Do you feel that students are hate to write in first grade or are they still interested? Do they use writing in multiple outlets other than storying writing? Have you tried to blog or e pal with them? I think the first graders from last year that I taught would have loved flexing their writing muscles in other ways and forms of communication. I can't wait to try it this year.
