American Legion officer embezzling $20,000 from Gridley’s American Legion Post 210, according to the Butte County District Attorney’s Office.
Defendant William Henry White III, 45, of Gridley pleaded not guilty Thursday in Butte County Superior Court to a single felony count of grand theft by embezzlement, according to a press release from the District Attorney’s Office.
White, a former American Legion officer, is alleged to have used from the American Legion’s checking and savings accounts to cover personal expenses between August 2014 and February 2015, according to the release.
The former officer had access to the accounts at the time the funds were allegedly stolen, District Attorney Mike Ramsey said in the release. The total amount allegedly embezzled was $19,808.
Ramsey said White allegedly admitted the embezzlement to an American Legion superior in February. The defendant allegedly told his superior that could no longer bear the guilt of embezzling from his friends.
The district attorney said White allegedly cooperated with an investigation conducted by the Gridley-Biggs Police Department and has begun to pay back a portion of the money.
A preliminary hearing in the case has been scheduled for Sept. 15.
White remained out of custody on his own recognizance.
