Let's hope it's not depressing at all

Well, that settled it. Rory had noticed Amelle’s reduced feast presence, but had thought that maybe he just hadn’t been at Sonora long enough to know the habits of his colleagues, even those of Amelle. But now, hearing that she was missing out on meals with her friends because of work, he was definitely going to start having lunch with her in the library. It would be nice for her (or so she said) and there was no way he was going to turn down an invitation to spend more time with the pretty witch whose company he so enjoyed. And, if Amelle did need to take a break for even just half an hour, he was still going to stand by his offer to cover for her, even though she claimed he already did enough. It was Amelle: of course he was willing to go above and beyond the call of duty for her!

Exotic was definitely a good word to describe his life before Sonora, and Rory knew that part of him would always miss the freedom of those days, with roads stretching out before him, new creatures to discover, and nothing to hold him back. “At least I have the holidays to get my travelling fix,” he replied, smiling as he thought of his summer. Whatever happened in the future, he would always make sure to spend at least a few weeks each year returning to his old life. The time he spent with wild animals was great fun, and he also found that he needed the escape from everyday life. Taking off for the summer had, ironically, been relaxing, and had refreshed his enthusiasm for the year of teaching that lay ahead of him. Besides, how could he be a decent teacher of COMC if he never spent any time with the creatures he taught about?

As Amelle moved closer to him, Rory found himself imitating her and moving closer too. Could she read his mind? Did she know that what he wanted right now, more than anything else, was to hold the wonderful woman in front of him in his arms?

He laughed at Amelle’s reaction to his question, and at her answer. There was no way he could see Amelle settling down with just anyone to please her parents. To be quite honest, he wasn’t sure if she’d be happy to settle down with him, but he was getting the impression that she wasn’t completely averse to the idea. He shook his head at her as she claimed to not be much of an adult. “You put yourself down, but I think you’re pretty amazing,” he said, smiling softly at her and taking her hand. Something about what she said told him to just go for it, that now was one of the times when he should take a chance and hope that it paid off. If he could face down a chimera, then surely he could tell Amelle how he felt? After all, life was boring and pointless without a little risk. Throwing all thoughts of caution to the wind, he kissed her.

  • Amelle shrugged. “It’s why I haven’t been to any meals since the feast and only go to dinners when I do have helpers.” Amelle explained. She really didn’t have any options regarding her work hours.... more
