We can clear that up

Alec Edwards was back in RMI, and Garen Tennant did not care for that one bit. The counselor couldn’t decide whether the portrait was more or less intrusive than the year Alec had frequented the school as an “inspector”—essentially a euphemism for purebloods invading the school and ensuring the curriculum sufficiently represented pureblood interests. (‘Supremacy’ might be a more accurate term.)

Fortunately there had been no hints from the board that a reprisal of that was in RMI’s future, but the portrait of Alec Edwards was arguably more permanent. At least he was stuck in one place (at least until he convinced the other portraits to let him move between their frames), but that place was just outside the Recreation Center Edwards Recreation Center. Garen could not think of a single thing that would make a student less inclined to recreation than being heckled by an arrogant pureblood patriarch.

He’d given Madeleine express permission to take the “secret” passageways entrance when she wanted to go to the rec center. Ordinarily Garen didn’t want her roving the passageways (although his daughter did so anyway), but in this case it seemed like the lesser of two evils compared to anything Alec Edwards’ paint-and-canvas likeness might say to her. While Garen didn’t think Madeleine would attempt to vandalize any part of school property, she could be remarkably vengeful lately. He didn’t want her to take any chances with an offensive portrait that definitely had magical protections.

A knock at his office door drew Garen out of his worries about Madeleine. He rose to answer the door, but before he was halfway across the room, the handle turned and the person who had knocked let herself in. About ninety percent of the people who visited Garen’s office were regular guests or fellow staff members. The first-year who entered was part of the other ten percent. “That’s me,” Garen answered her with a cheery grin. “Come in.” He gestured for her to take a seat in the chair opposite his desk. “What can I do for you, Ms. Dixon?”
