Not only was the door open, but Mr Tennant was there. Well, of course he would be if the door was open, he wouldn’t have left it unlocked. Not that he would need to leave it locked, Vivica didn’t imagine there was a student or teacher in RMI deemed the locking of doors necessary, but he was there. Mr. Tennant was there, and Vivica was going to have to talk to him.

Vivica had not seen a counselor before. She’d seen many doctors and social workers. Even a special assistant who tried to help her at school without much avail. Many specialists had tried helping her deal with her episodes, but never a counselor. ’A shrink. A head doctor.’

Mr. Tennant welcomed Vivica in and sat down in the chair opposite his desk. Her movements were careful, and considered. She made herself as small as possible when she shat down. Her arms were tucked at their sides. Her legs together, knees touching. Her hands firmly clasped in her lap. Her eyes fixated on a point somewhere between the desk and the floor. It didn’t take a fancy degree to see that Vivica was there because she felt like she had to, but she sure as hell didn’t want to. ‘How do I tell him I’m crazy?’

Vivica was quiet. She didn’t know what to say, and even if she did, she wasn’t quite sure how she’d say it. It helped that Mr. Tennant had a slightly calming air about him, his office was neither here nor there, but that kind of helped too. ‘That’s why he has this job, isn’t it. People can relax around him I guess’. Vivica sat trying to work out how to talk to him. All she had done was disturb Mr. Tennant, enter his room, sit on a chair and stare into space. It felt awkward. She was visibly uncomfortable about sitting in silence for such a length of time (whilst in reality, no more than a minute had passed) and it eventually got the best of her. “I don’t have tourettes.”

Vivica looked at Mr. Tennant. “They all just get too much and sometimes I have to make them stop. I shout or scream and it works. They go away.” Vivica’s voice buckled. “But when I got here, they went away anyway but the others turned up and” Vivica started fighting back some tears “that was ok, I got used to it. I’ve had to zone, but not shout.” Vivica pulled her sleeve over her palm and wiped the tears that refused to dissipate from her now soggy cheek. “I thought I was doing well, but then I went home and they came back.” Vivica’s emotional dam broke as tears streamed down her face “I’m not crazy” She blurted out “please tell me I’m not crazy!”. Vivica pulled her legs up and sunk her head into her knees, wrapping her arms around them.
