Learns how to count cards

Mr. Tennant’s semi-committal reassurance that he didn’t have to tell Vivica’s parents didn’t exactly inspire confidence in her. Her mind flitted between cautious optimism and deep dread with every breath. ‘What if he tells them I’ve been lying?’ ‘What if he tells them I’m crazy?’

“what do you mean? Is it that you’re thinking about things they’ve said, or… something else?” Vivica sat still. She’d never thought about it, or, she’d not thought about it in recent history and as such couldn’t commit to having thought about it. Vivica pondered the question and was, for a moment, completely distracted from her emotions. So much so, she didn’t realises how clear her thoughts were.

“It’s not something they’ve said, it’s…” Vivica paused, carefully selecting her words. In truth she didn’t know how to explain what it was, but she was cetrain she knew how she didn’t want to explain it. She didn’t want it to sound crazy ‘There’s that word again’. “It’s like I imagine what they would say, privately(?). Maybe what I think they’re thinking(?).” Vivica looked at Mr. Tennant for affirmation that what she was saying was what he was looking for. Unsure if that would suffice, she continued. “But when I came here, like I said, I couldn’t hear Mum or Dad. There were new…” Vivica gulped, “voices.” Vivica felt uneasy in admitting it to the counselor. “And they were Okay. I got used to them. I didn’t recognise any of them, but sometimes, like that time in Defence against the Dark Arts, when I just thought about kissing Drew.” Vivica, so caught up in the moment narrowly avoided make the connection between Mr. Tennant and Drew and rambling on. “I’d only met him the day before and I didn’t want to kiss him really. I just, the thought came out of nowhere.” Vivica reasserted her gaze on Mr. Tennant, hoping he understood more of what was going on than she did. “Does that make any sense?”
