This day can't get much worse
Sat Aug 19, 2017 15:20

Today was not a good day. It had started as an average day, had been sauntering gently in the direction of pleasant, but then Danny had overheard some gossip in the library that sent this day plummeting smartly into the realms of absolutely awful.

He knew it was true, even as he wished it weren't. He remembered that Marissa had been almost late to class that day, because he'd noticed her sundress when she came in. He remembered Emmett grumbling after class about Ruben making cryptic comments, but Emmett complaining about Ruben was nothing new, so Danny had dismissed it. He knew that Rose was mad at Ruben but he hadn't asked why - he had assumed it was something he didn't want to know. Kaye had even told him, but they had been arguing about the baby project, and Danny had assumed she was just trying to rile him up. Now, as Heather was telling someone - Danny didn't know who, he couldn't see them behind the shelves but he could hear Heather’s voice just well enough to pick out words here and there - what she'd overheard when she sat behind Ruben in their mandatory class, and afterwards in the Aquila commons, it seemed indisputable. Marissa had…with Ruben… and they'd…

Danny put down his quill. He'd been struggling to concentrate on his essay already, and there was no chance of him writing it now. His head was too full of thoughts, the most prevalent being that it couldn't possibly be true. Could it? Heather was good at her gossip, but she was prone to exaggeration. Maybe it was just a misunderstanding. Marissa and Ruben couldn't possibly have… He had to get out of there.

Rebelliously leaving the books on the table he had been using, instead of returning them to their rightful places, Danny unceremoniously threw his quill, ink and parchment into his bag, and swiftly left the library before Heather had a chance to see him there. He could pretend he'd never heard anything. He could continue being ignorant.

Except, the sixth year realised as the library door closed behind him, he literally couldn't think about anything else. Did everyone else know? Wait no, nothing probably even happened anyway. Marissa wouldn't do that with Ruben, because Rose obviously liked Ruben, and Marissa wouldn't do that to Rose.

Danny frowned. He looked at his watch. It was a bit early for him to collect their baby from Kaye (who had grudgingly agreed to join in the project after all, despite originally declaring she would not participate), and he had hoped to finish his essay before taking his turn with Patience, but he headed toward Aquila anyway. Maybe he could talk to Marissa. He could just tell her what he'd overheard Heather saying, and leave it at that. But damn it he wanted to know. No, no he didn’t. There was no way he wanted that confirmed. But if it wasn't true - which is obviously wasn’t - he needed to hear Marissa deny it. Why? Merlin only knew.

The Lyra scuffed his feet in frustration as he rounded the corner into the admin quarters. Should he talk to Marissa? She'd evidently done something with Ruben and not told him about it. That was how they were now - she didn't tell him things any more. She used to, when they were friends, before he'd messed everything up by kissing her. It wasn't his business, he knew; he'd ended the chance he had of Marissa’s conquests being his business. Damn. Maybe he could talk to Rose instead. Or ask Kaye if she actually knew something or if she really had just been winding him up. Or…

Oh. Danny looked up and discovered he wasn't the only person intending on lingering outside the Aquila commons.

    • Well, I'm here to make it better! - Ruben Lundqvist, Sat Aug 19 15:30
Whistling cheerfully, Ruben sauntered down the hallway, his usual long stride only a little hindered by the unzipped duffle hanging off his shoulder. He didn’t normally keep his bag unzipped, and he... more
      • You're right; this is helping - Dardanius, Sun Aug 20 16:24
Of course Ruben was there, because that was just about the only thing that could make Danny’s day any worse at this point. He wasn’t alone; Russell was there, too, and Danny couldn’t hear exactly... more
        • Happy to hear it - Ruben, Mon Aug 21 22:39
Ruben had barely reached towards the items on the floor when he felt a hard shove from behind. That was unexpected. Having spent too many years in martial arts training to sit (metaphorically) (a... more
          • So altruistic - Dardanius , Tue Aug 22 10:12
Seeing Ruben slamming against the wall was very satisfying, but only for a moment. After a breath, Dardanius was ashamed that he'd resorted to primitive reflexes because he couldn't keep his emotions ... more
            • Bubbles? Seriously? Jävla fan , whose arm did Danny think he was pulling with that? Following up with an attack worthy of a twelve-year-old after having already slammed him was not only a garbage... more
              • Im not convinced that's true - Danny, Thu Aug 24 04:08
If Danny thought he had anger issues right now, it was nothing compared to Ruben’s furious demeanor. All because he’d been pushed into a wall, which admittedly wouldn’t usually count as a good time,... more
                • Danny went down. Which was great, because that had been the point. You didn't punch someone in the face if you were planning on continuing the fight further. If there was such thing as a rulebook of... more
                  • Disagree - Danny, Fri Aug 25 08:23
Rather than garnering any satisfaction from seeing Ruben’s immobile body hitting the floor, Danny was just frustrated. This was merely proving his mantra that violence never solved anything, and if... more
                    • We can't all be right - Ruben, Fri Aug 25 21:19
Ruben couldn’t hold back a snort of laughter at Danny’s instruction. “Reputations are not bad, not something to fight. To know that people can know you in some way from a distance is a fact to be... more
                      • Just me - Danny, Sat Aug 26 08:26
Ruben was obviously missing the point. Dardanius suspected part of this might be wilful misinterpretation. “It's not your business what I do or did with Marissa,” he said calmly, when Ruben asked why ... more
                        • And me! - Ruben, Wed Sep 6 22:40
“She doesn’t want people talking about her like that. It makes her upset.” Ruben half-listened to the other boy’s rant about how he should shut his mouth or whatever because Marissa hadn’t said he... more
