We can't all be right

Ruben couldn’t hold back a snort of laughter at Danny’s instruction. “Reputations are not bad, not something to fight. To know that people can know you in some way from a distance is a fact to be proud of,” he informed the (clearly morally inferior) boy. Danny’s priorities were out of order. “But…” he continued on, nodding along as he spoke in mock thoughtfulness, “why do you care? Right me if I’m wrong, but did you not break up with her?” There had been quite the dramatic reveal of that uncoupling in the days following Marissa’s party - admittedly, his perspective on just how dramatic it was had been undeniably influenced by Heather blabbering her way around their House commons, which in turn had meant he had eye-rolled his way through all of that gossip because it was dumb and Heather was dumber for thinking it wasn’t dumb.

He hadn’t figured it was actually too big a deal to Marissa. It shouldn’t have been, right? Wasn’t like they had been dating for very long, and they were completely different people, anyways, and also serious relationships were weird to begin with (yeah, he still held that opinion, even after dating Holland. Ruben had been totally committed to hen while they were dating, but that didn’t mean he entirely understood the idea behind going one-on-one like that). But, like, after the clothes went back on, mostly, Marissa had announced this was a one-time thing, he had agreed, and they had high-fived. They’d left on a positive vibe. No way she was worried about her reputation or whatever… Although, being kind of friends and all, maybe he should double-check with her eventually. Although first things first.

“Do not worry,” he continued on nonchalantly, “I will not have sex with your ex again. Probably.” Ruben smirked and shook his head in an extremely mild attempt to seem serious, which promptly and unsurprisingly failed at his next words. “Of course it is natural to brag a little when a very hot girl jumps you like that. Maybe you don’t know yet, but that is something one normally takes as a compliment! But, yes, I know where to--” He drew a line across his throat, clicking his tongue against his teeth. “Boundaries are good. Consent, like Ofosu said, ja? I do have some practice at this.”

Ruben didn’t bother addressing his comment about the sunglasses freak, because whatever, but he perked up a bit at the order to fit in or get out. “What do you mean? I get along wonderfully! And when I do not--” his smirk got distinctly toothier “--well, what is that saying? ‘Friends are a street that goes in two directions’?” Realistically, he’d love to transfer out. It wouldn’t be hard to do. The Heads at Durmstrang would be happy pleased okay not a positive emotion because that never happened, but they would take him back with an expectant attitude questioning why he had ever left, which was a fair point since he’d asked himself the same almost daily since leaving. The main reason he’d come at all was because Anssi needed stability, and the kid was doing pretty well these days, so. It would be fantastic to go back to his friends. (If only he could find a way to drag some of the better RMI girls and Holland along with him… And, maybe even Danny. He was Pretty Boy and a wimp and not ideal company, but not too too bad.)

Rather than garnering any satisfaction from seeing Ruben’s immobile body hitting the floor, Danny was just frustrated. This was merely proving his mantra that violence never solved anything, and if... more

Ruben was obviously missing the point. Dardanius suspected part of this might be wilful misinterpretation. “It's not your business what I do or did with Marissa,” he said calmly, when Ruben asked why ... more
