Ruben was obviously missing the point. Dardanius suspected part of this might be wilful misinterpretation. “It's not your business what I do or did with Marissa,” he said calmly, when Ruben asked why he cared, “same as it's nobody else’s business what you do or don't do with her. She doesn't want people talking about her like that. It makes her upset.” Really Marissa should be able to do whatever she wanted without judgment, but somehow people always knew, and people as a collective were judgmental. Danny would obviously rather she didn't do anything at all with Ruben (too late for that now) but he'd defend her right to do it, and for her private life to be her own.

It became clear that Ruben wasn't going to listen to a word he said when he then launched into yet another brag. Danny clenched both his fists and seriously considered hexing Ruben with his own wand. Yes, boundaries were good, and yes he already expected it was consensual, otherwise he would have been less concerned about what sort of spells he had used just now. “So great, she hasn't given you consent to brag, so keep your mouth shut,” he retorted, trying to keep objective but the subject matter was really the very last thing he wanted to discuss, and Ruben was the very last person he’d want to discuss it with.

Danny also noted that Ruben elected to ignore his comment about Russell. Maybe he was wrong about all of this - talking evidently was not getting him anywhere. Perhaps violence was the solution after all. Danny sighed. “Right. Well suit yourself.” When he was inevitably required to talk to a member of staff about starting a fight at school, he was going to make sure they knew about Ruben’s treatment of Russell. He would, however, leave Marissa out of it as best he could.

“I'm going to the medic and I'm taking this,” he raised Ruben’s wand, “because she’s going to ask how it happened.” He thought Ruben was probably grotesquely proud of landing a punch and a curse on him, but just in case he decided to plead ignorance, Danny wasn't letting him obscure the evidence by casting more spells. “You can come if you like,” he added, aborting a shrug as he turned heel and set back off down the corridor. He'd been early to meet Kaye anyway; now he'd probably end up being late.
