Wrong direction

“I will have you know,” Ruben informed her, taking on an aloof tone, “that I keep my gym bag in very good condition.” This was actually true. He used it for everything - actual gym clothes and his (borrowed from the shed but claimed for personal use) Beater’s equipment, of course, but also his schoolbooks and even Emmett’s fake baby when they were fake parenting. Duffle bags were just so versatile and convenient. Large, soft-sided, expandable or collapsible depending on what you put in. He didn’t actively clean it or anything silly like that, but you could bet he already had a range of charms placed on it, most notably one that repelled liquid and another that made anyone who touched it when he wasn’t present develop a spontaneous itchy rash on their fingers…. Hey, there was another option for his runic brick. Hmm.

Reverting back to a more normal tone of voice, he added to Camilla, “And also I do not wear socks to exercise. Barefoot is best. Makes strong soles.” This was also a very genuine belief of his. Indeed, the soles of Ruben’s feet had nice hard callouses, built up over the years to naturally protect him from rough terrains or unexpected hot-rocks. (Probably. Hadn’t had an opportunity to test that one yet. Sweden wasn’t exactly a land of volcanoes, but he had goals of checking out Iceland once he could Apparate over national borders.) Plus, barefoot meant he could really get a feel for the land, literally. Dirt and pine needles mushed around his toes on his daily runs through RMI’s underground forest, and it was a satisfying sensation.

“Decide what’s the worst/best alternative for you… I like both.”

Her admission didn’t sound like a joke this time. Was she being serious? Camilla was both laughing and blushing now, and he cracked up, too. “Aww, thank you for sharing such a private thing with me,” Ruben teased her. “Your boyfriend must be happy. Or girlfriend,” he amended, looking her over with only slightly feigned interest for a moment before returning his eyes to his paper.

But not for long, because suddenly there was an impact with his chair. The chair toppled over backwards and hit the floor with a loud crash. Technically, this crash came from Ruben, because it was his lanky body that tipped the weight over and slammed it down. More accurately, the loudest sound that came from Ruben was his swearing, which was mostly Swedish with a few inventive Russian phrases he’d forgotten he knew thrown into the mix. Pineappleing rotted pineapple, that had hurt. Pushing himself upright, he turned an icy glare onto Camilla. It had to have been her. “What the hell? Pineapple you with a pineapple.” His handy Biting Jinx was on the tip of his tongue - but no wait, he could literally see Holland in his range of sight, they’d never forgive him even more if he jinxed someone in front of them, even if that someone was a blob of pineapple slime like Camilla - but he could try Vanishing her chair. Which he did, focusing his anger in hopes it would work wandlessly and nonverbally. No time like the present to experiment, right?
