Rose could be abrupt, especially if she got distracted by schoolwork—Holland was fairly certain Rose was the smartest of their friend group, at least in terms of academics (she scored lower on emotional intelligence)—so it wasn’t that unpredictable for Rose’s attention to shift to her rune pattern. Holland took the hint and resumed their work on their project. Fairly satisfied with their design, Holland picked up the block of wood and the chisel.

The chisel seemed to be enchanted (Holland checked the wooden handle but didn’t see a rune carved there), and it was easier to carve the large jera symbol into it than Holland had expected. Since they were carving smaller runes inside the lines of the main rune, Holland made their lines extra wide. They had almost finished with jera when Rose resumed the conversation. Before Holland had time to wave off her apology, Rose had answered their question and asked another.

“No, he’s been avoiding me too.” This hadn’t really surprised Holland, and their tone reflected that. “Seems like a fair response to a semi-stranger talking to you about gender identity, if you’re a conservative thirteen-year-old. I just gave him information, so it’s up to him what happens next.” Which would probably be ignoring Holland and burying stuff, at least for a while. Dade hadn’t been thrilled about the gender conversation. They had noticed him getting more uncomfortable as the conversation progressed, which could mean that he’d been nervous that what Holland was saying applied to him, or could just mean that he just got uncomfortable when gender was up for discussion. Cis people were like that a lot of the time. There was a reason Holland didn’t often talk about nonbinary stuff with their friends. Maverick was an exception, because he got it, most of the time. And Emmett was a good listener but he wasn’t the fruitiest loop in the cereal box.

Speaking of. “How are things with Emmett?” Holland asked. Despite their (and Danny’s) curiosity, Holland hadn’t really discussed the relationship with Rose. And they were really curious, because, like, what? Literally no one had seen that relationship coming.

Holland briefly wondered if it had something to do with the transfer influx.

“He is totally obsessed with Cocoa Puff,” they added, instead of letting Rose, their least conspiracy-minded friend, in on their suspicions. Emmett had taken to bringing his puffskein to class and putting tiny bows on her and such. It was much cuter than Sonny, which had just been sort of creepy because Holland could not forget the fact that the baby doll was an animated doll. Cocoa Puff was real and much cuter than an Uncanny Valley baby. “It’s cute. She was a great gift.”
