Rose made a face at her paper when Holland described Dade as conservative. She thought that was unfair. Connor was definitely conservative (she was 99% sure he disapproved of Dade’s friend Remington because she wasn’t white) but Dade? Not so much. Socially awkward and brusque or grumpy, sure, but conservative? Nah. Plus, nobody who was truly conservative could be friends with Kit and Dade and Kit were, in fact, friends. Or something. Rose didn’t want to know the details of that arrangement because she strongly suspected Kit was being talked into something questionable. Holland did quickly change the topic though, to one that was a little bit more Rose-centric. Unfortunately.

“Emmett and I are great,” Rose said with a cheery smile in Holland’s direction. She wasn’t sure what her yearmate knew. Had Emmett told them that he and Rose were fake-dating? Emmett and Holland were really close and Rose was pretty sure that Emmett’s ability to lie was minimal at best. Although by now, Rose and Emmett had pretty solidly blurred the lines between ‘dating’ and ‘fake-dating’. It was probably Rose’s fault, she realized as Holland brought up Cocoa Puff. Because of course stupid sappy Emmett had given the furball a stupid name. Such an Emmett thing to do. “I just figured that I should spare us all the whining about his fake baby being gone,” Rose shrugged. She was blushing a little bit, she knew, and she felt awkward. She wasn’t sure what to say. She hated being caught doing something that looked emotional to other people.

But Holland was right, seeing Emmett with Cocoa Puff was pretty cute. The little bows were adorable and the puffskein seemed pretty happy with them. Plus, Emmett practically cooed over the thing at every possible opportunity. Rose had found it creepy when Emmett acted that way about a baby doll charmed to act like an actual baby, but when it came to an actual living creature - yeah it was pretty cute. In a weird way. A way that made Rose feel just the slightest bit uncomfortable with how her stomach flipped around at the thought. Ugh.

“How’s Danny and Rachel?” Rose asked casually, changing the topic. Holland was closer to Danny than Rose was. Interactions between Danny and Rose tended to involve a lot of gentle ribbing and casual competition on both their parts. She was pretty sure that Danny spent a lot of time being thankful for her not hexing him, which was exactly how Rose liked her relationships. Holland, on the other hand, was a much more squishy, emotional human who actually had conversations with people about their feelings. Which actually made it a little bit weird that they had asked Rose about the situation with Emmett rather than asking Emmett, who was arguably their best friend. Had Emmett told Holland, and Holland was just trying to get her to admit it?

“I do like Emmett,” Rose let out defensively, not noticing whether Holland had started answering her question. “I mean. Like.” Wait, what was she saying? Merlin she’d gotten herself into something this time. “He’s a good boyfriend,” Rose concluded kind of lamely. “We work well together.” That wasn’t false, and it wasn’t more emotional than Rose was willing to admit to. She, unfortunately, suspected that it wouldn’t be quite enough for Holland-the-conspiracy-theorist though.

Rose could be abrupt, especially if she got distracted by schoolwork—Holland was fairly certain Rose was the smartest of their friend group, at least in terms of academics (she scored lower on... more
