I hoped you wood notice

A licorice wand was a good option in theory, since it was already shaped like a wand, but Holland declined the offer with a friendly wave and a “Keep it, I’ll keep looking.” The candy was the right length to be their wand, but too sticky to hold and probably too floppy. Holland’s wand was more flexible than most, but not licorice-bendy. Plus Danny probably wouldn’t want it back if Holland held it for a while, and Holland didn’t like licorice, so it would just go to waste.

Holland waved their empty hand dismissively at their coffee cup. “Well so far the cup has done an admirable job of posing for a still life. As in it hasn’t moved or done anything else I’ve been trying to make it do. Watch.” They made the come-here wand motion at the chai latte with their hand and said the incantation for the Summoning Charm. The cup didn’t budge. Holland shrugged.

Danny was working toward becoming an Animagus too, so practicing together just made sense. Plus they were friends. They could have been roommates or at least neighbors if Holland had chosen that side of the Lyra dorms, but living with girls was more socially and olfactorily pleasant, and Holland did not regret the decision they had made when they arrived at RMI. Either way, they were close. Holland nodded their approval of Danny joining them. “Worst comes to worst, I’ll practice dodging and Frankie’ll be thrilled when I don’t get Bludgered off my broom next match.” It hadn’t happened recently, but Holland was hyperaware of how badly Quidditch could mess a player up. They tried to imagine a more dangerous sport. Synchronized lava swimming, maybe, or competitive dragon-tickling. People were apparently just fine with how insane Quidditch was.

As their Housemate got situated, Holland continued the search for something wandlike that wouldn’t make their hands smell like anise. There were some fragments of chalk on the lip of blackboard, which Holland repaired into one long chalkstick and turned to wood with a wanded, verbal spell.

“Wandless is sooo hard. I can at least do basic charms and human Transfig nonverbally.” They’d been practicing on their eyebrows. Holland used to leave the eyebrows the same regardless of the dye job up top, but lately they’d been using magic to match them. Today Holland’s eyebrows were their natural dark brown color, though. Coral was not a good shade for brows. “But without the wand nothing happens at all. Which is ridiculous, because other wizarding cultures don’t use traditional wands and they can use magic adeptly. Us Westerners have a built-in handicap on our magic use.” They’d already decided this was going to be the topic of their next Cultural Studies paper. “I think it’s deliberate. It impedes individual citizens from getting too powerful.”
