At last I see the light

Drew and Remington had owled back and forth over the summer. Remington said that her dad made her take a self-defense class with him over the summer, and Drew had told her about the defensive spells Aaron was teaching him. Both of those were because of the Connor thing. Drew wasn’t sure if they were gonna keep doing “Spellwork practice” (not technically an incorrect name because he was learning spells!) now that school had started back up again, but he’d decided it might be a good idea for him and Remington to get together and share the stuff they’d learned over the summer.

Last night Drew had been at the Cetus bonfire for the whole feast, and afterwards he’d gone back to his dorm and caught up with Huburt. Then this morning he’d had breakfast with Kit, so he hadn’t had the chance to talk to Remington yet. But maybe after class today he could. He really wanted to get a jump on that before he forgot any of the stuff he learned over the summer. There was this one really cool hex that made your joints go kind of wibbly like jello jigglers, and Drew thought Remington would think it was totally cool.

Kit had already picked their seats, so for now Drew just sat down with his cousin, waved to Dade when the older boy came in, and listened to his stepfather welcome the new students to the class. He usually liked Aaron’s class ideas, although for today, Drew thought that they probably didn’t really need to work in partners to do a hide-and-go-seek game. He guessed that Aaron wanted to really ease the new students in, though. And some of the old students. Not everyone got to practice over the summer because Muggleborn kids couldn’t use magic at home. Plus partners helped people meet each other, which really helped at the beginning of the year.

So if Aaron said they should try to work with first-years then Drew wasn’t going to argue. Although maybe Kit shouldn’t work with a first year. She wasn’t great at like, directions. Usually Drew ended up working with her because they were best friends (also because Drew was used to her and could sometimes contain her Kitness to like, just their own work area, which was an improvement). Okay so maybe Drew should work with her instead. Aaron probably wouldn’t mind. Hardly any of the professors ever said Kit and Drew were working together too often, probably for the above reasons. He turned to his cousin to suggest they work together anyway—

Aaaaaand Kit was gone. Drew looked around to see where she had scampered off to and nope she was already talking to a first-year so never mind, that was no longer Drew’s responsibility, good luck, kid. Looking around the room, Drew made eye contact with a student who didn’t have a partner. He nodded to confirm that he got the message and was gonna work with the other student, got out his cedar-and-dragon-heartstring wand, and crossed the room to them.

“Hey!” Drew said when he got there. He was kind of enthusiastic because it was the first day, but that was kind of hindered by the fact that this was the first class and it was early. “Have you ever done this spell before?” It felt like a fair question to ask. Drew knew he could do lumos—it was a pretty basic charm—but not everyone had been working on Spellwork over the summer. Or he supposed he could just see for himself. “You can give it a try first, if you want,” he suggested.
