How about sticking with you?

The first-year called Darby a thing and Kit narrowed green eyes at him. Was he also racist against tarantulas? Or no, what was the word Drew had said to use. Specist. It meant racist against tarantulas because ‘racist’ was a word to describe people like Connor who said mean words to Drew and ‘specist’ meant people like Darlene who hit poor defenseless tarantulas like Darby because they were mean. Connor and Darlene had a lot in common. Well, they had being mean in common. Maybe they could go be mean friends in the mean people corner and be mean together.

Anyway Kit’s brain had gotten her sidetracked for long enough that she didn’t have time for asking Leon if he was specist because the lights were all of a sudden out and Leon was saying a word. It sounded like he was trying to say Lumos but it was wrong, so even though there were pale lights popping up all around them, Kit and Leon were still standing in the relative dark. Darby’s little fangs chittered next to Kit’s ear. Darby liked the dark because he was nocturnal. When Kit didn’t take him around with her, he slept during the day and came out to play at night-time. When he was with Kit, Darby took frequent naps with adorable little tarantula snores. Kit was so happy she had a friend like Darby.

“You said the words wrong,” Kit said authoritatively, pulling her own wand out of her pocket where she kept it like Grandpa Aaron. She held her wand out a little bit and said “Lumos,” then grinned when a faint ball of light appeared at the end of the wand. It wasn’t the strongest one in the whole class but it wasn’t bad. “You said too many letters, you should try again,” Kit added, trying to be helpful. “Go on, try!”

Darby rubbed his two front legs together in encouragement and stared directly at Leon. Darby was such a good friend.
