Now that was uncalled for

Sometimes Kit was a very patient person. She was good at arts and crafts, like making costumes and things. She was going to help with costumes for the school musical this year, and she made cosplay costumes all the time at home even if Mom and Dad said she was too young to go to anime conventions. And you needed patience to do costumes because sometimes you had to sew something by hand, or sometimes you messed up and had to start from the very beginning and do it all over again. And sometimes things were very, very detailed so you had to be very, very careful. Which technically didn’t have to do with patience but kind of did so Kit was going to count it towards the list of things she was patient about.

But the redhead had never had a younger sibling. The closest she’d ever gotten was Madeleine, and Madeleine wasn’t a crybaby. Kit was rapidly realizing that she did not have patience for crybabies, and then the crybaby named Leon started yelling and also crying and oh Merlin was he stupid.

Kit understood that not all of her classmates thought she was smart, but she wasn’t dumb. Sometimes she did things like lick potions ingredients and people who weren’t Drew made fun of her, and sometimes she did things like accidentally spill a potion that made everyone tell the truth, and sometimes she got a concussion in class because she accidentally turned someone’s arm all icy and hard and they swung it around and hit her, also by accident (Ruben would never hit her on purpose because they were friends). But that didn’t mean Kit was dumb, it just meant she was clumsy sometimes. And okay, she mostly got As in class but it wasn’t like she was failing or anything, she just wasn’t getting super smart people grades. Leon, on the other hand, was dumb.

“I’m twelve,” she interrupted him when he said she was older than him. Kit knew that twelve wasn’t a whole lot older than eleven. She wasn’t a teenager. She wasn’t old enough to date (well according to Dad, nobody was old enough to date but especially not people who were named Kit and were twelve years old) and she wasn’t old enough to get her Apparition license and she wasn’t old enough to go pet dragons and there were lots and lots of things she wasn’t old enough for, just like Leon. Kit would say that she was at least old enough not to cry about a tarantula, but she had been old enough not to cry about a tarantula when she was eleven so she really didn’t see the point of making that argument. “And I said most spiders, stupid. And tarantulas. Aren’t. spiders. “ Leon kept talking so Kit repeated herself, still talking over him. “Tarantulas aren’t spiders and I don’t care that you’re a big, fat, mean crybaby. That’s not my fault. And if you’re such a big crybaby maybe people aren’t bullying you, they’re just saying you shouldn’t be a crybaby because you’re eleven years old and my cousin who is eight is better at not being a crybaby than you are.” Kit paused for effect, then yelled “CRYBABY.” as loud as she could.

Darby, who didn’t usually like loud noises, was clicking his little fangs very rapidly in Leon’s direction, like he didn’t like Leon very much. Darby seemed to like most people okay, except not Darlene but that was a special case. He was a very friendly tarantula and he sat on her shoulder or on her books or on her desk whenever she was studying. Sometimes he took a little tarantula nap but Darby spent a lot of time with Kit and he had never seen Kit this upset, and was reacting accordingly. He rubbed his legs together and they made a hissing sound, all eight of his little eyes glaring in Leon’s direction.
