Of core-se I did

Holland rejected the offer of the candy, so Danny shrugged, took a licorice wand for himself, and put one end of it in his mouth, holding it there with his teeth while both his hands were engaged in putting the paper bag into the front pocket of his school bag. He watched and listened while Holland explained their lack of progress. “Is the coffee an incentive?” Danny inquired. “If you can move it closer to you, do you get to drink it?” He wouldn’t use coffee, or any beverage, himself, due to the aforementioned lack of control. He was as likely to be wearing the latte as drinking it by the time it reached him. “Maybe you need a better incentive,” he suggested. Honestly he wasn’t very good at helping other people with their work; his closer friends had long ago stopped asking him for any sort of insight. It wasn’t that Dardanius was trying to be unhelpful, but if the things that worked for him didn’t work for someone else, for whatever reason, he lacked the creativity or drive to find a different solution.

Dardanius settled his bag onto the floor and he began rummaging in it - one handed, the other holding half a licorice wand - for something suitable to use as a subject for his spells. He located his slanted quill - it was quite smart, featuring an attractive blue and black striped feather from some sort of Jay, so it was a shame he couldn’t work with it - and laid it flat on the table in front of him. Considering his current inaccuracy, it was definitely better to work with smaller objects and work his way up to something more potentially dangerous as a projectile. Holland, meanwhile, was wandering around, apparently still looking for a wand replacement prop. They were also ranting about Westerners relying on wands for magical use, which was a relevant point, Danny thought, but in true Holland style it quickly escalated into a controversy theory. While he had discovered that his friend was definitely keen to engage in discussion about their more radical ideas, Danny sometimes lacked the enthusiasm these debates necessitated. On this occasion, as Holland had permitted him to share their workspace, Danny refrained from any outward signs of disparagement. “It might explain why all animagi are required to register,” he suggested, wondering why he was fuelling the crazy fire. He ate the rest of his licorice to prevent him from adding anything further.

“Okay, just mind your eyes for a while. The nib on this thing is pretty sharp,” he warned. With his wand still in his bag, Danny clasped his hands in front of him - he had tried various movements and positions but this seemed to wield the best results - and cast the Summoning Charm. The quill did a wild backflip away from him. “The good news is that I can definitely use magic without my wand,” he commented. “Unfortunately I’m having limited success at getting it to do what I want.” Before midterm he hadn’t had any success at all, so he was still chipper about his progress. “I can’t do any transfigurations, though,” he added, “wandless or wordless. My non-verbal charms are coming on okay but I’m really struggling with transfiguration spells.” It was the first time in his school career he had any issues with transfigurations. It didn’t bother him, particularly, but it might interest Holland, or possibly offer reassurance that Dardanius was having trouble, too.

A licorice wand was a good option in theory, since it was already shaped like a wand, but Holland declined the offer with a friendly wave and a “Keep it, I’ll keep looking.” The candy was the right... more
