Satveer hadn’t seen the new kid in the common room so he didn’t really have much to go on. A quick glance at Jesse revealed nothing. Well other than the stark contrast of his dark hair upon his pale skin that could be associated with the villain of a graphic novel, Jesse seemed ordinary.

Satveer hated the idea of how people make judgements based on first appearance. Often, in Satveer’s case, these judgements were wrong or clouded and you never get to show who you really are! Satveer found that only once he’d gotten to know someone did he make a truly valid judgement. Apart from Kit. Satveer’s first impression of Kit was that she was loud, bouncy and a barrel of fun – something that still appeared true.

The lights went out and the room was plunged into darkness. “You can call me Sam” Satveer leaned into to Jesse “We can give it a go together if you want?” he said whilst running his wand down the fold of his robe. Satveer didn’t know why he chose to polish his wand at that point, it just seemed the right thing to do.

At school, Satveer’s wand was much like any other wand but at home it was a personal victory and ‘screw you’ to his siblings. The day before he left to return to school, Satveer had spent over an hour sat at the dining table buffing and polishing his wand. The handle and hilt were cleaned and oiled whilst shaft had been buffed to a high shine. Satveer didn’t know if a highly buffed want held any magical purpose, but it annoyed his siblings when he did it, and that was all he wanted.

Satveer held his wand out, tilted his head and focussed on his wand. No sooner had he muttered the word “lumos” a bead of light happened at the end of his wand. In an effort to appear cool to the first year, Satveer stifled his grin and looked towards Jesse, “Now you” he said with a nod.
