Before coming to RMI, Kit had thought that she liked people a lot because she got along with everyone. The other kids in her class at Rock Creek Elementary werenít all her best and closest friends but they were pretty okay and they didnít hate her and she didnít hate them and maybe Kit didnít get invited to everyoneís birthday party every year and maybe sometimes that was probably because sheíd accidentally smashed the cake the year before but that was okay because sometimes people only wanted their best and closest friends at their birthday parties and Kit wasnít their best and closest friend. And that was okay. Kit had her cousins and her big sister and sometimes she got in trouble for playing too rough on the playground but only sometimes.

But then Kit had come to RMI and had been faced with things that made her think again about how much she liked people. For example, when Darlene had been a meanie-face and had hit Darby last year after Midterm. Or when Connor had called Drew a mean name and then Drew had hit him. Or right now, when Leon was being a big, giant, stupid crybaby and trying to get Grandpa-Aaronís sympathy when it was really all Leonís fault to begin with for being stupid.

Because not only was Leon being stupid, but he was being stupid in a really needy way like how Professor Robís niece Julia acted sometimes except she was a literal baby and Leon was supposed to be eleven. Kit had been eleven last year and she could distinctly remember how she had not, not even once, burst into tears in the middle of class. And he kept calling Darby a spider.

Grandpa Aaron was going to make Kit wait until Leon was done talking before she could talk, so Kit didnít bother trying to interrupt him even though he was being super stupid and super mean and Kit wanted to tell him so. But as soon as Leon sounded like he was done letting the dumbest words Kit had heard in her entire life come out of his mouth, she started telling her side of it.

ďGrandpa Aaron thatís unfair and heís being a mean crybaby,Ē Kit said emphatically. ďIím not in charge of Leon because Iím not his mom or his babysitter. Iím not old enough to babysit Madeleine so Iím definitely not old enough to babysit him, heís like a year younger than me, and Iím not his tutor and he didnít even give me a chance to help him ANYWAY before he started calling Darby a spider and crying like a little baby and he needs to grow up and act like an eleven year old like everybody else because you donít see THEM crying now DO you?Ē the redhead gestured wildly around herself, presumably at the rest of the class, which was mostly obscured by darkness. ďAnd for your information,Ē Kit said, turning her green eyes towards Leon again, ďspiders are small. Tarantulas are big. And literally never not once ever has a tarantula bit someone and killed them. So there.Ē

Leon took the seat next to his Head of House. The boy's eyes still puffy and red, though he has seemed to stop crying for now. He took a loud exacerbated breath, then decided to speak. ďOkay, I guess ... more
