But now your grip is steady

Yeah when I put this shirt on I did think you'd be proud of me making an effort to co-ordinate, or whatever.

Holland beamed. They thoroughly enjoyed seeing that they had been a good influence on the Lyra boys’ fashion senses. Emmett didn’t seem to mind so much anymore when Holland volunteered to put makeup on him, and now Danny was also looking sharper. So yes, they did feel a bit proud. “Yeah, well, you’re totally pulling it off. Bravo.” The boots looked like dragonhide—the wizarding equivalent of fancy leather—and they were a vivid but not ostentatious color. That shade of green looked good with Danny’s complexion.

Danny then apparently took a voyage to a different mental place, which gave Holland time to prepare for another wandless attempt. They searched their bag, which contained no writing implements but did have three different types of lip makeup (gloss, liner, and lipstick), and eventually found an empty mint tin they wouldn’t mind magically messing with.

“Right now I’m just hoping that wanting it enough and tricking myself with the fake wand will help,” they told Danny, when he returned from his trip. “And maybe I’ll try a transfiguration instead of a charm.” Holland excelled at most Spellwork—not as much as Rose, but enough that they were considering going into a field that heavily involved experimental charms. Holland was interested in long-term enchantment of magical devices, especially in the context of catching the wizarding world up with the Muggle world. There was a Floo-based equivalent of cell phones, but not smartphones, and Holland saw a lot of potential in wizarding apps and internet. The wizarding world would be a lot better if it were more connected. Magical communities being so isolated couldn’t be a good thing.

Anyway, transfigurations were easier for Holland than charms. The concept that physical things could be fluid came naturally to them, for probably obvious reasons. They put the tin on the table near Danny’s quill and pointed the formerly-chalk wand at it. Focusing on the mental image of a creamer pitcher, Holland said the incantation and did the wand motion to make it become one.

The overall shape didn’t change, but the tin shuddered and one side slowly sprouted a handle. It was thin, but it existed. “Yes!” Holland crowed, jumping up and down in excitement. “Okay, so it’s like a muscle memory thing. My magic thinks I need to be holding a wand.”

He wouldn’t argue; it would be easy for someone to abuse Animagus powers, but Danny didn’t necessarily agree that made the registry sensical. There were plenty of people who were Animagi who would... more

      • My thoughts have wand-ered - Danny, Sun Mar 12 13:35
“Hey, not bad,” Danny grinned at Holland’s transfiguration. If his enthusiasm sounded muted, it wasn't because of Holland’s performance. Yes, the prop of a wand was only the first step in a... more

Mostly ignoring Danny, Holland picked up the mint tin and examined it. The side opposite the new handle had also folded into a slight lip, which meant it was even closer to a creamer than Holland had ... more
