I'm a little doubtful

“I don’t suppose a Fizzing whizbee would sweeten him up?” Alena joked tensely, seeing as that was about all she had to offer. She chewed her lip worried about what the sporadic lesson plans of the mad professor would mean for her overall grade.

Alena had really wanted to do well this year. She had been scraping by in most things and although she tried to console herself with the knowledge that Benjamin had been terrible at school and everything seemed to be going alright for him, the memory of how disappointed papa had been in Benjamin’s academic record kept creeping to the forefront of her mind. Papa had called it embarrassing and Alena really didn’t want her papa to be embarrassed of her. She also didn’t want to have to put up with Charline berating her all Summer for her supposed laziness and threatening to act as her Summer tutor. The idea of spending her Summer in her sister’s company hearing how inept she was at just about everything was a sobering thought and a rather good motivator.

Alena watched Remington’s efforts to get Giovanni's attention with unease. “Oh-no it’s okay. Don’t-” she whispered in meek protest. But it was too late Remington had proceeded with her unorthodox plan of action and all Alena could do was look on in silent horror.

Alena would never have had the nerve to yell at someone like that, nevermind throw things at them! Alena wasn’t sure what to make of it. She’d always thought Remington, was a nice, smart girl but now she worried that Remington wasn’t going to be able to make a good match when the time came. Benjamin said that Charline had been a little disruptive at school which had made finding a match for her troublesome and she had ended up married to Marcos. Alena didn’t want something like that to happen to Remington but she didn’t know how to voice her concern so she forced a strained smile and tried to focus on the project instead.

Alena felt a fresh wave of panic when Remington asked for her opinion. Alena never had an opinion on this sort of thing. Anything was too broad a scope for Alena. She much preferred to have things narrowed down for her. She had really been counting on Remington to solve this problem. Alena was just there to smile and nod and occasionally voice her admiration of the other girl’s ideas. Eyes focused firmly on the table, Alena awkwardly attempted to put the pressure back on Remington, “As long as it doesn’t involve soap I’m OK with anything you want to do.”
