Rose had applied to 9 schools overall; Holland had applied to seven. They had both gotten into their safety schools in February. Rose had never doubted that Holland would get into whatever school they really wanted to get into, so when they’d gotten into Minnesota, Rose had been unsurprised. Her own acceptance to Tift had been surprising in that she had convinced herself that no school would want her since Harvard had deferred her, but ultimately unsurprising given the acceptance rate and her qualifications. That was what Rose was going to hold on to in her head. She had gotten into Tift and no matter what, she was going to be able to go to a school where she would have a lot of opportunities. No matter what.

“I’m just going to open them,” Rose decided out loud, looking at the pile in front of her. The letters were in fairly random order, given that they had been sliding around her bag for most of the day. The Aquila swallowed hard and looked at the envelope on the top of her pile. All right. No more putting it off.

Holding her breath, Rose opened the first envelope carefully and unfolded the parchment inside. Her eyes flicked over the page until she found the words she was looking for and nearly collapsed in relief. Accepted. She had been accepted to NYU! That made two schools, two choices that she had. She didn’t finish reading the letter before putting it down on the desk beside the pile and looking at the next one. The momentary relief that Rose had felt evaporated and she felt her heart leap into her throat. It was the Harvard letter. She had hoped that the Harvard letter would be last - Rose needed to know, but at the same time didn’t want to know because she was pretty sure that there was nothing but disappointment waiting for her inside that envelope. The other schools she had no idea about, but she had already been deferred by Harvard, not good enough for their first round of selections. Rose didn’t have much hope for the second round, particularly as she had applied to more schools than she had initially planned to, mostly out of a degree of resignation that her shot at Harvard was not great.

She took the envelope anyway, turned it over, opened the flap, and stared at the folded parchment. Rose squeezed hazel eyes shut for a moment, then opened them and unfolded the letter, prepared for -

Havard had accepted her. Rose squeaked and jumped a little in her chair. She felt like there was just energy sizzling inside her entire body, waiting to come out. She wanted to run laps or whiz around the Pitch on a broom or something because she had gotten in. The thing that had been her goal since she figured out she wanted to go to uni - Rose had done it. She was good enough for Harvard. It didn’t matter what any of the other letters said, because Harvard wanted her to attend. That was it. She had done it. She couldn’t believe it.

“Holland I got in,” she said breathlessly. “Harvard accepted me! I got in to Harvard!”
