Sounds like a cult invite

Unusually, Jesse knew the name of this student. His name was Andrew Tennant, but staff and students alike called him Drew. He had the same last name as one of the professors, but not a teaching professor (did that mean he wasn’t a professor after all? What was the collective term for staff members who weren’t professors? Jesse thought there might be one but he wasn’t sure what it might be). Drew wasn’t in first year, but he did have classes with Jesse, so he must be either a second or third year. He never seemed to have trouble finding a partner in class (Jesse often had trouble finding a partner in class, and so he mostly worked with other students who had trouble finding a partner in class; neither of the team were anyone else’s first choice) which indicated he was popular with the other students. He thanked Jesse, which the first year presumed was gratitude for providing the information that Drew had popcorn in his hair, and he had done that, and not for putting the popcorn there, which had presumably been accomplished by Drew standing near a decoration, as had happened to Jesse. He thought it was likely that Drew would know that, and thanking a person for putting popcorn in your hair seemed strange, anyway.

Drew did eat the popcorn from his hair (and Jesse did not judge him for it) but he said it tasted like orange soda. Jesse regarded him with an expression that was both gently perplexed and lightly intrigued. “Mine tasted salted,” he said. He considered that perhaps the decorations distributed a different flavor every time they exploded, but the logistics of accomplishing that seemed complicated. He would have assumed that each lantern held a different flavor except he’d just seen Drew get showered by the same decoration, so that could not be accurate. “I didn’t know popcorn came in orange soda flavor,” he told Drew. He had heard of popcorn flavor soda, but not orange flavor popcorn. Or popcorn flavored oranges, because the fruits had their own flavor not dependent on additives or a production process. That was just how they tasted.

“I’ve never been to a party with exploding decorations before,” Jesse said next, as some glitter poured down onto an older student standing a distance away. “Or, well, one time I think my brother had a birthday party with a pinata but that didn’t explode all on its own,” he stipulated, regarding the table laden with treats. His parents didn’t let the Keller children have too much sugar at home but the pinata had been stuffed full of candy and they’d shared it out among all the guests at Felix’s party. Jesse had hidden quite a lot away, thinking he would save it and have something sugary to snack on in secret whenever he wanted to, but then he’d just eaten them all that evening and had a stomach ache. Even as that story played through his mind Jesse reached for a handful of M&Ms from a big bowl. He was older now, so he could probably eat more treats and not get so sick.
