A picture paints a thousand words

History of Magic had the potential to be an interesting class. Georgina liked some history - the Ancient Egyptians had been fun to learn about, and they had done a Shakespeare project once at her primary school that had been fun - but some of it was dull. The Wars of the Roses was dull. Even Guy Fawkes plotting to blow up the Houses of Parliament was dull, because it hadn’t actually happened, and she’d gotten the impression the poor guy had been the group scapegoat. Pretty cool legacy though, having effigies and fireworks and shit every year because of something you may or may not actually have been involved in. Regardless, seeing as Muggle history was sometimes fun, magical history definitely had that potential. But Professor Boot seemed to have lost the memo. Or… okay that wasn’t accurate, because Boot clearly enjoyed history himself: he was always rambling on about one goblin rebellion or another. He just couldn’t teach it to be interesting, which made him terrible at his job, and Gigi really had trouble granting respect to people who were terrible at what they literally spent their life doing. Improve or move along.

Gigi slid into an empty seat in the lecture hall, converse, skinny black jeans and glittery purple vest top fully visible with her absence of robes. Her insanely curly brown hair was held back from her face by a purple bandana tied like an Alice band. The first year had just gotten comfortable when Boot started up, and yep, there was that goblin rebellion. Turns out they weren’t studying the rebellion today, but writing a timeline of their own lives. That was some introspective bullshit in which Georgina had no interest. How was she supposed to know what were most important parts of her life, or whatever? Being born was obviously the headline, but that was succinctly disallowed. Hmm.

Catching a roll of parchment as it almost sailed right past her, Gigi decided that she’d add in her first instance of accidental magic, too. Her folks were both magic, so she guessed they had been expecting that trait to be passed down to their unintentional spawn, but it was probably a relief to them when it had happened, and to Gigi it had just been wicked. She was climbing a pear tree in her orchard back home, which she wasn’t actually allowed to do because the branches were flimsy and not precisely capable of holding even her scrawny, six-year-old self, so obviously a branch had broken. She’d hadn’t fallen out of the tree or anything - she had more nimbleness than that - and then she’d picked a couple of pears, jumped down, and had a delicious fruity snack. Then her Mum had appeared practically out of nowhere - literally, she had Apparated right into the orchard - and Gigi had been preparing herself for a tirade, when suddenly the branch was back on the tree, and the pear cores had disappeared, and everything was hunky dory. She’d have gotten away with it, too, if her witless, childish self hadn’t needed to brag about picking pears from the orchard and told her Dad all about it later. The traitor went and told her Mum, but thankfully they were both just interested in her using magic, so she’d avoiding a ticking off for about the first time ever.

With something to worth with, at least, Georgina started to unroll her parchment, only to discover it was taller than she was, and she wasn’t small for eleven thanks to having a lanky lunatic for a father. She rolled it right out onto the desk of the person seated beside her, and put her pencil case - made entirely of zips of different bright colours - on top it to stop it rolling back up again. “I wouldn’t put it past Boot to not realise we are all beginner students, and could practically fit our timelines on the back of a postage stamp,” she said to the student seated at the desk she had commandeered. “So what do you reckon counts as important?” Gigi unzipped one of the many zips available and pulled out a small quill and a pot of black ink from her pencil case, leaning almost in front of the other student to do so. “I guess we all learn to walk and talk, or whatever, too, so that’s probably banned. Same for starting RMI, as, again, we all did that, too.” She paused and glanced briefly around the room. “I wonder how many girls in this class started their periods yet? I should write that down. Boot probably won’t even know what I’m on about, yeah?”

  • A story about you (HoM Years 1-3) - Professor Samuel Boot, Sat Aug 4 15:02
This school year was so far very much like most school years, except that it was very light on Tuesdays. Samuel Boot and the poltergeist Shifty Eyes usually played poker on Tuesday evenings, but... more
    • Timeline... yada yada... goblins... - Satveer Mittal, Mon Aug 20 09:39
The day had so far been a long one. Satveer had to continually push himself to get through it. It didn’t help that History of Magic was one of those subjects that Satveer cared little for. Whilst it... more
    • Out, damned spot! - Jesse Keller, Tue Aug 14 15:27
There was a blotch of ink on the back of Jesse’s hand. It was dark blue, the standard shade for ink, except for black, which was possibly more standard for wizards, now he thought about it, but... more
      • Have you tried soap and water? - Sadie Embers, Sun Aug 19 16:17
When it focused on battles and wars and all those intense conflicts, History of Magic was pretty interesting. The subject’s potential was pretty high. It didn’t call for any magic, really, and that... more
