Satveer Mittal
Timeline... yada yada... goblins...
Mon Aug 20, 2018 09:39

The day had so far been a long one. Satveer had to continually push himself to get through it. It didn’t help that History of Magic was one of those subjects that Satveer cared little for. Whilst it played a vital role in his education, he had little interest in history or the past. Something his great grandfather had said to him when he was younger often found itself being mentally repeated the start of HOM lessons… History is written by the victors. Or at the very least, the literate. Boot had gone on something about timelines and yet another goblin rebellion but Satveer found himself continually distracted. The night before he’d convinced himself the moon was still not right and he wanted to have finished it by the weekend. The timetable was going to be impacted. Aggrieved, Satveer did as required and drew a line on some paper on his desk whilst he sat (posture be damned), cross legged on the edge his seat with his sketchpad in his lap.

Whilst he’d committed to help out for this years production. And he’d even accounted for the time it would be taking. He’d vetted it against his STOATs timetable and his allocated Kit time (although, the production had the added benefit of him occasionally stealing extra time with Kit in her benevolent role of costume overlord). He hadn’t accounted for a new moon. The concept designs were good and he’d started getting a handle of his detailed designed. All but that bloody moon! He’d mocked up a full scale paper moon to levitate in place, but the shine of the day had all had just dulled and because of that stupid post Satveer just wanted to curl up and go back to sleep. Satveer knew it wasn’t about the moon, but at least the moon was something within his control.

Satveer had been writing to Dilbaagh, his sister, since the start of term. He really liked having someone outside of school to talk to about, well, everything! Katherine, his exams, the production. He wrote to her about it all. It also helped that Dil seemed genuinely interested in it all. Especially how it was going with Satveer and Katherine. Satveer made sure to not share too much in his letters, not that there was much to overshare, but he kept her up to date with things like their date and sometimes what they did. Dil’s responses were often a little gushy as far as Satveer was concerned, and her letter responding to how Satveer and Kit were now holding hands was a way too mushy (even for Dils standard) - and cooties weren’t a real thing anyway so yeah.

That morning however, Satveer had received his latest letter from Dil. Only this time it was different. It was Dil’s writing for sure, but it didn’t have the neatly drawn D on the back, covering both the flap and the lower part of the envelope. The pink envelope had nothing but it’s address to Satveer. It was only when Satveer began reading it, he understood why. Dil usually had a way with words, but this time she lavished no affection on what was a very apologetic letter. Satveer’s heart sank. “...Bal found your letters...” - “...knows about Kit.”. Satveer had only told Dilbaagh about Katherine. He knew she could keep a secret. If it was true (and Satveer had to reason to doubt Dil), Balbir, Satveer’s brother, knew about Kit then it was only a matter of time before his parent’s did. Satveer was sure his father wouldn’t have anything nice to say about any of it. The one saving grace is that Balbir wouldn’t tell them straight away. That’s not how Bal operated. He’d hold the information hostage. He’d blackmail Dil, or Satveer or both until the opportune moment and they drop the Kit bomb to save his own ass for some future reason. Satveer couldn’t be mad at Dil, he knew she’d have kept it secret and hidden. Bal was searching for it or something like it. There were no other words for it. Bal could be a divisive prick!

Ignoring his timeline, Satveer focussed on the moon. If he could just finish the design, it would all be ok. He’d already gotten his stage measurements down, and it was just a case of re-evaluating his moon sizing, or at least that’s what he was trying to do. He couldn’t shift the thought of Balbir knowing about Katherine and what he might do. Satveer didn’t want to keep her secret from his parents. Kit wasn’t a secret to anyone in school. They were a couple (a fact that he was extremely proud of). He wanted to be able to tell his father proudly ‘this is Katerine my girlfriend!’ However he knew how his father would react to his sikh son dating a redheaded witch of unknown magical origin or family ties (as his father would term it). And it would be all the worse if he found out via Bal. Satveer’s gaze focussed well beyond his lap. He stared into eternity. His thoughts elsewhere. His hand drawing an ever bigger moon until his mechanical pencil left his pad and scratched into his leg, cutting him and breaking his lack of concentration. Satveer let out a bout of pain and frustration. “Fuzzzy… duck!!”
