Connor Farnon [Cetus]
Thoroughly shocked

As a lofty second-year student, Connor had hit his stride in all of his classes. Spellwork and Potions were okay, Astronomy was boring and chilly but it wasn’t the worst thing ever, History of Magic was also boring but ultimately easy, and Defense and Magizoobotany were both messy and uncomfortable, but handleable. Unlike Cultural Studies. Cultural Studies wasn’t (usually) messy and it wasn’t (usually) boring, but it was (usually) very confusing and it made him uncomfortable. Professor Blair was intimidating - and more so since she had become noticeably pregnant - and Connor was not inclined to tell her so, but he found a lot of the course content to be ridiculous bordering on propaganda. They hadn’t quite reached the point of talking about house-elf rights, but they had discussed non-human societies as though they were equivalent to human society, and that was just wrong. Connor knew that not all of his classmates knew better, which was even more concerning. He was too intimidated by Professor Blair to enlighten his classmates, but the fact that he felt the need to made Connor very uncomfortable.

Despite that, the middle Farnon was able to get relatively good marks because he was good at memorization and saying what the professor wanted him to say - a trend that continued when he received his exam back. It certainly wasn’t the highest score in the class, Connor was sure, but it wasn’t a bad score either. Absolutely more than adequate for a class he would be dropping at the first available opportunity.

Today they were doing some sort of activity about different types of people, which Connor wasn’t particularly pleased about. He didn’t need to know what Muggles thought about things because he was unlikely to interact with Muggles in any serious context. The second year sighed and smoothed his brown hair, straightened his robes, and looked around for someone to pair with. Professor Blair had instructed them to find a partner of a different year, and although Connor wasn’t a huge fan of the class or the professor, he was largely a fan of following the rules. The person sitting directly to his left in the approximate middle of the class was Kateri Lemont, who was in his year and therefore out of consideration as a partner, which was unfortunate because she was usually fairly good at coursework. Connor sighed, hazel eyes zipping up and down the rows of the classroom for an appropriate partner.

There.

Connor stood, straightening his khaki pants as he picked up his gray backpack, stuffed full of the books he would need for the day, and walked down the stairs until he had passed three rows of chairs.

“Hello,” Connor said, noting that the other student had already drawn a slip out of the box. “Would you mind if I worked with you?”
