Stabilizing a little, though

“I’m not sure it’s any of your business.”

“...Oh.” It was weird to be turned down like that. Marley was, very very briefly, stumped on what to say in response. Because, well, why wouldn’t it be her business? Grades were personal, but not really private, and they were classmates so they were supposed to be helping each other anyways. But Claudia was actually putting away her paper now, too. If she hadn’t, Marley would probably have recovered from her surprise and re-asked, but that gesture seemed to mark the end of the conversation and she was well-mannered enough to know that it would be a little rude to drag it on. Darn. Brown eyes darted to the other girl’s paper, and she did get a quick glimpse of the E on top, though, so at least there was that.

She was definitely gonna go to office hours later today. Maybe after a nap, she amended to herself, a dark-skinned hand raising too slowly to cover an enormous yawn.

Taking the slip from Claudia, she repeated it out loud. “Marriage. Oh, this is probably easy, right? Like...” She waved vaguely at the board. “Like, centaurs. I dunno if they get married, but probably they know about it ‘cause isn’t there like, some kind of treaty they have with wizards? That counts, right?” Marley paused and then giggled to herself, frizzy hair bouncing as she shook her head. “But maybe we should start with the human stuff first, since like, we’re human, so we can talk about it more.” True, she herself didn’t actually know a ton about marriage. Seen them on television, of course, and there were tons of movies that had weddings, but she had never been to a real life wedding. But surely that was still fine for this class; there was always something to talk about in Cultural Studies, even when all you had to say were the reasons why you didn’t know something, and that was great, in her opinion. “Unless you know a lot about centaurs?”

It was possible that Claudia was able to talk about centaurs, she supposed. Especially since she had gotten such a good mark on the test. Claudia and Connor were two people that Marley considered in quite the same light: good friends (obviously) and more studious than she was (also obvious). The thirteen-year-old was able to remember general stuff pretty well, so she knew there had been something about centaur-human relations in History of Magic, but the details ran away from her pretty fast. Especially in History of Magic, actually. Professor Boot was amazing but also really spooky, and she usually stared at him too much to get around to taking notes.

Claudia enjoyed cultural studies. She knew she lived in her own privileged little bubble, and she was fine with that, thank you, but she didn’t enjoy ignorance. Cultural studies was fascinating,... more
