Anssi was not the type of student to make very many notes in class. He had written almost everything in the first couple of years, but since then, he had found that listening was more helpful than writing for remembering what they learned. But there were always exceptions, like today: Professor Aaron was giving an introduction mixed with explanation of what Spellwork really was now that they were past the beginning levels. Having such an interesting start for his first class of fourth year meant he had to write it down, which in turn meant the blonde was hunched over his small folding-arm desk, one sneakered foot swinging aimlessly under the chair while his pen scratched not aimlessly on his notebook.

The reminder that they might soon be able to start studying animagus magicks prompted an interested glance up. Neither of his older siblings had ever studied to be an animagus - it hadn't been offered at Durmstrang, where Dagny had gone to school, and Ruben just seemed to think turning into animals was not worth it when he could spend time doing other things, like wrestling trolls or cheating on his girlfriend. (As happy as Anssi was to have Kaye still in his life, having expected for a while to never see her again after she graduated, he was also still very confused and a bit frustrated that jävlar idiotisk storbror had tricked her to keep dating him. He knew that Kaye was very independent and strong and pretty and wanted to imagine she was in control of the decision, but also, why would she have decided to get back together with Ruben without being at least a bit tricked? Gah.)

Anyways, he thought it would be neat to join Professor Aaron's animagus class, and he couldn't deny that some of the appeal was because it was something he could be the very first of his family to do. Maybe he would ask about trying it next year...

Following along with instructions, Anssi promptly took the slip of paper and patted it sticky-side-down to his forehead, making sure that it didn't catch any loose hair. He had started to experiment with hairstyles over the summer and currently wore it pushed back and sort of on top of his head with a little gel, which he quite liked, even though he hadn't completely figured out how to keep all his hair back and sometimes it came loose. (And, no, despite what Ruben suggested when he first showed up uninvited, Anssi absolutely had not decided to cut his hair in order to be more different from him. That was just a side-benefit.)

He had been sitting next to Malachi - by chance, not by choice; his roommate had not done anything to improve his opinion of him from last year - but he did have a choice in who to partner with. So when the other Draco turned to him, Anssi made an excuse. "I already agreed to work with a friend today," he invented on the spot, gesturing at the first student he saw who looked like they were alone. Malachi made a short suspicious face at him, but then pretended like he hadn't and turned away, so Anssi picked up his bag and his sweater and hurried down the aisle of seats to the person he'd seen. "Hei, I'm sorry if this is very random but, can we pair up for class? I told Malachi we would," he said in an attempt to explain, although his expression probably said more than the words did. There was no way that Malachi was taking every class, but still Anssi had seemed to see his roommate everywhere last year, and did not want to start their first day of classes by having to work with him, too.

  • Teamwork makes the dream work [Spellwork, Yrs IV - VII] - Professor Aaron McKindy, Sat Mar 2 10:54
It was best, Aaron had decided, for him to focus on his work. After the events of the summer, he had immersed himself in the book he was writing about theoretical spellwork and practical application, ... more
    • Definitely dreaming if teamwork is involved - Petra Stiglitz, Thu Mar 14 20:21
If there was one reason that Petra appreciated having a predisposition to headaches, it was the fact that she could get away with blaming her poor attitude on that. It also meant that she could... more
    • One foot in the grave - Leopold Harris, Tue Mar 12 16:55
Leo was dying. He had never died before but he imagined it must feel something like this. His head was throbbing so painfully he wanted to get his fingernails and claw through to his brain to scrape... more
      • The other in the poop bucket - Satveer Mittal, Thu Mar 14 13:13
To say that Satveer didn’t want to be there was an understatement. His summer was a disaster and his returning to RMI was somewhat treacherous. Satveer had regretted ending it with Kit. He’d... more
        • It's really not my day - Leo, Thu Mar 14 16:35
Get some? Get some what? Sleep? Merlin, he hoped the kid was talking about sleep, and not asking a senior student, how he might get some action. That would be disturbing. He propped open one hazel... more
          • Who’s day is it ever? Really? - Satveer Mittal, Thu Mar 14 17:51
The older boy was somewhat brash in their initial response. Such a response put an already low Satveer on edge. Clearly whatever it was that they had enjoyed the night before was good enough to... more
            • I dunno. But it's not yours. - Leo, Thu Mar 14 20:48
Leo was much too cranky to have to educate some fourth year on the dangers of underage drinking. Really, this shouldn't even be a conversation. If the kid was smart (which evidently he was not) one... more
              • Agreed. - Satveer , Fri Mar 15 11:38
Satveer felt very much out of his depth. He’d never challenged anyone like that before, and he didn’t know why he’d done so now. It wasn’t his best move. He wasn’t an alpha male. He didn’t really... more
                • Think we're due a change in luck? - Leo, Fri Mar 15 13:02
"I'm sorry,” the boy said, his hard exterior crumbling, and Leo felt himself relax in return. His pretense had worked. He would be free to continue his bootlegging business without interference from... more
    • Rolling into the new year - Darlene Knight, Mon Mar 11 14:52
So the school year was finally getting in swing, and Darlene had already learned a lot. Mostly about Dade Dakota Farnon. She was pretty sure Kit had tried to explain the situation to her, but nothing ... more
      • Roll like a pumpkin - Remington Burnham, Mon Mar 11 20:07
Of her peers, Remington knew she was often the most excited about the first classes of the term, and her fifth year was no exception. Her nonverbal magic was coming along quite nicely. She planned to ... more
        • Pumpkin rolls are nice - Darlene, Tue Mar 12 14:54
Remington Burnham was not someone that Darlene knew particularly well. However, she was poised to like the older girl because of their mutual friends and relationships: if Claudia and Drew both liked ... more
          • Pumpkin spice donuts sound amazing - Remington, Sat Mar 16 22:16
Remington didn’t necessarily understand why Drew liked Darlene so much. Her best friend talked about his girlfriend, of course, so she’d heard the reasons. They sounded like good ones, too. Drew... more
            • Remington began, and immediately, Darlene frowned. The realization that this was actually going to be terrible swept over her as its terribleness came into tangible effect. Not that she had any... more
    • Wanted: anyone but Malachi - Mikael Anselm Lundqvist, Sun Mar 10 11:58
      • Ever feel you need to be more specific? - Claudia Dubois, Sun Mar 10 17:11
Claudia hadn’t known the graduating class very well - she did not think she’d ever interacted with either of the Head Students, and her acquaintanceship with Kaye was based largely on long-lasting... more
        • Not so far, it hasn't gone too badly - Anssi, Mon Mar 11 23:00
Claudia Dubois would certainly have not been his first choice, but she was sitting not too far away and alone, so he had taken the risk. The moment where she just looked past him frowningly and said... more
          • I'm not as bad as everyone says - Claudia, Thu Mar 14 18:26
“You did that?” Anssi said. Claudia quirked an eyebrow in affirmation. She thought Anssi looked impressed as he sat down. She decided, however, that his personal response to the incident didn’t... more
            • I'm realizing that now - Anssi, Sun Mar 24 21:34
Anssi had not come across the word ‘expedient’ before, and briefly wished it would not have looked rude for him to pull out his pens again and make a note to look it up later. The reason why his wish ... more
              • Will you walk into my parlour? - Claudia, Sat Mar 30 11:21
Anssi reassured Claudia her description was fit for purpose, and she was almost in sufficiently good humor to return the smile that accompanied his speech. The description her partner then provided... more
    • Wanted: anyone but Kit - Andrew Tennant, Sun Mar 3 19:21
Merlin, Circe, and Agrippa, Drew could not get stuck with Kit as his partner for this class. Out of everyone in Spellwork, Drew might have the best chance of understanding whatever rambling... more
      • Be careful what you wish for - Connor Farnon, Tue Mar 5 08:11
Much to Connor’s outright dismay, the term so far seemed to be matching with Natalia Carboni’s predictions for him that she had chosen to share endlessly during the opening feast. He thought it was... more
        • Do I get three wishes? - Drew, Tue Mar 5 10:40
Never mind, Kit would’ve been better. Or, well, not better , because they almost definitely wouldn’t have finished the assignment, but Drew didn’t think he was going to finish the assignment now... more
          • Was that a wish? - Connor, Fri Mar 8 14:07
Why was it that everyone except Claudia in this Merlinforsaken school was so unspeakably rude? If Andrew was disinclined to talk about what was clearly Dade’s mental disturbance, Connor would argue,... more
            • More of a request - Drew, Sun Mar 10 17:29
Honestly Drew deserved a medal just for the fact that he didn’t instantly punch Connor. Actually it worried Drew that his first instinct was to punch Connor. Connor might have a really punchable... more
              • Aren't we polite today - Connor, Mon Mar 11 06:26
It wasn’t as though Connor was a coward, but Andrew had already demonstrated his violent tendencies in years prior and the sixth year had absolutely no intention of getting into another brawl.... more
                • You may have spoken too soon - Drew, Mon Mar 11 12:43
If Connor wasn’t such a simpering coward Drew would formally challenge him to duel for the words that were coming out of his mouth, but the fourth-year was certain Connor would refuse so there was no ... more
                  • Doesn't sound like me - Connor, Thu Mar 14 18:54
Honestly, even though Connor knew that Andrew had been training with dubious magic around the time that Dakota had attacked Claudia, he hadn’t expected the younger boy to go for his wand. Perhaps he... more
                    • You’re usually so reasonable - Drew, Thu Mar 14 22:07
Between Connor falling on his face like an idiot and this being the first time Drew had ever used nonverbal magic, Drew was feeling pretty good right about now. Good enough to laugh. As Connor stood... more
                      • Reason is my middle name - Connor, Sat Mar 16 19:26
Yes, just as Connor had suspected, he had Andrew precisely where he wanted him. There were moments of silence that stretched between the two Ceti in a way that Connor relished. He wasn’t sure that he ... more
                        • Drake is mine - Drew, Sun Mar 17 11:56
Oh crap oh crap oh crap. Now, Drew knew for sure that he himself was bluffing. He was just guessing about it being Marley, and guessing about whether Connor really cared about Claudia knowing about... more
                          • Way too cool for you - Connor, Tue Mar 19 13:06
It had absolutely slipped Connor’s mind that Professor McKindy was in possession of a Pensieve. As a whole, Connor had not found that lesson tremendously useful and would have rather preferred to... more
