Yes, just as Connor had suspected, he had Andrew precisely where he wanted him. There were moments of silence that stretched between the two Ceti in a way that Connor relished. He wasn’t sure that he had ever been in a situation where he felt he had so thoroughly won before. In fact, Connor realized, he had spent a fair amount of time feeling like he wasn’t winning at anything. It was probably partially something that happened when you had Rose as your older sister. Rose was hyper-competent, incredibly aggressive, and good at both Quidditch and Dueling. She was going to Harvard and paying for it, which Connor had realized over the summer was no mean feat. His internship over the summer with Cornelius Knight had taught him quite a bit about both financial institutions and society. The internship had ended well, with the man offering to take him on over the next summer as well, which Connor had barely refrained from jumping at. He had accepted gratefully, of course, but had mostly managed to avoid seeming desperate. The Farnons were not a well-established family, but with contacts like the Knights and the potential of a career in the financial sector, Connor could see himself moving in the right direction.

Assuming his brother didn’t ruin everything.

There was something absolutely wonderful about Andrew holding his hands up in surrender, and Connor felt even more smug, which he hadn’t thought possible. While last night had been quite stressful and he didn’t imagine that the rest of the week would go much better, at the very least he knew he now had this power over Andrew. That was something.

Then Andrew made a threat right back, and Connor almost opened his mouth to say something right back. Then, it occurred to him that this interaction was just like some of the deals he had been in the room for over the summer. It was a negotiation. Connor had yet to try his hand at one himself, and he was, in the moment, panicking slightly, but one of the first things Cornelius had instructed him on was maintaining an appropriate business demeanor, even when it appeared as though circumstances were not moving in your favor. He just had to make Andrew think he had nothing on Connor. That shouldn’t be too hard.

“I have never had any interest in dating Marley,” Connor said, trying to mimic the cool, adult tone that Cornelius Knight used sometimes. “But even if I did, I’m not sure why you would imagine Claudia would take your word over mine. Particularly when you’re known to be friends with someone who attacked her so violently, and a student of questionable magic yourself.” It wasn’t even false. Connor could think of nothing more laughable than for someone to accuse him of wanting to date Marley. It had been brought up years before and even then, the misunderstanding had been quickly sorted out. Since then, Connor and Marley had only managed to be civil to each other in Claudia’s presence, or when required to complete a course assignment. The idea that Connor had any interest in Marley even as a friend was preposterous - wanting to engage in certain activities with her had nothing to do with friendship or romance.
