Sure we can shake it up again

Having observed her peers - especially her own yearmates - for the past year and a half, Claudia was not in the least bit surprised when Marley began talking at a hundred miles a minute. However she would not have predicted the other girl would choose centaurs for her focus. “I know very little about centaurs,” Claudia replied, lightly amused by the turn the conversation had taken already. But then, her knowing little about another culture was sort of the point of the class, wasn’t it? There was some sort of treaty between wizards and centaurs, but Claudia didn’t believe it was beneficial to the centaurs, nor that it explained in any great detail about wizarding customs. The second year certainly didn’t know whether centaurs observed rites of passage such as matrimony. They lived in herds; they might be more polygamous as a species. Her thoughts were derailing fast. “I think maybe we should start with humans, if that’s okay,” she suggested before they embarked upon a meandering tangent, flipping her dark blonde ponytail over back her shoulder.

“For example, I’m a magically-raised witch,” she said, preferring her own terminology to that on the board, “and to me, marriage means a man and a woman joining together for financial security and to protect blood purity.” She pushed back the sleeves of her uniform robes and the powder blue cardigan she wore underneath, readying her quill on a fresh page to take notes. She thought for a moment, and then added, “I suppose affection is important, too.” Her parents were, after all, in love. Sometimes sickeningly so. However she knew they had come to love each other over time, and that when they had been betrothed to each other that they had only met on a couple of previous occasions. So perhaps she should amend her statement to something that implied affection might be preferable if it developed over time, or if a couple was sufficiently lucky to meet and fall in love before betrothals were arranged, but she couldn’t find the words. Instead, she just added a question mark after the word 'affection' on her notes, to indicate further consideration may be required.

Of course, Claudia had heard of witches or wizards who married Muggles, and she had to admit that her expectations of marriage did not allow for that sort of a union. When there was no consideration of blood purity, she wondered what reasons were cited, instead? “There must be some broader scope,” she mused aloud, mostly for her own benefit but she assumed she had spoken with sufficient volume that Marley would be able to hear her.

“I’m not sure it’s any of your business.” “...Oh.” It was weird to be turned down like that. Marley was, very very briefly, stumped on what to say in response. Because, well, why wouldn’t it be her... more

Marley had heard about the witch-hunts and stuff like that, but she didn't think it was really relevant. Obviously not all Muggles would be quick to get on with wizards, and vice-versa too (as was... more
