Or a distraction

Marley had heard about the witch-hunts and stuff like that, but she didn't think it was really relevant. Obviously not all Muggles would be quick to get on with wizards, and vice-versa too (as was being demonstrated in this conversation alone), but she was certain that for every person opposed to their worlds colliding, there would be one or more people who would support it. It was totally logical, and it would be so beneficial to everyone. What did Claudia expect - that evil scientists were gonna round up wizards and do experiments on them like mutants in the X-Men comics? There would be mass protest against it from Muggles as much as wizards, she was sure. Besides, she was pretty sure that Muggles didn't have any tech to actually contain wizards, which meant that they would have to recruit wizards to cast anti-apparition zones or something, and what wizard would go along with that?

At Claudia's next words, her pencil stopped spinning around her finger for a moment. "I'm not being selfish," Marley protested. "Even if all the Purebloods married Muggles, wizards will never die out, 'cause the magic gene will always be there." Magic was genetic, and she didn't know very much about genes, but because Muggleborns existed she assumed that meant that the magic gene could pop up randomly as well as be a result of a person's parents. Even if all the Pureblood families completely died out, that wouldn't stop the magic gene from doing.... well, whatever it did to exist. As her mum had shown her, it was the Evil Purist Purebloods who were the selfish ones. Her mum's job as a mechanic was all about integrating magic to make different vehicles safer or faster or just better, and it had taught Marley that wizards working with Muggles was really the future of the world. Claudia had mentioned dragons and stuff, which was a good point, but imagine - if Muggles knew about dragons and could be taught to help protect them, then wizards could stop wasting so much time hiding them and focus their magic on, like, saving the rainforest and curing cancer and other things that really affected all people.

She heaved another sigh. "We're just going in circles." Clearly she was getting nowhere. It wouldn't be easy to change Claudia's opinion. Maybe she should try to catch her on the weekend to finish this conversation - Claudia was normally way more focused than she was in class, and she expected that taking so much time to talk about this was probably annoying her (maybe?) friend. "And like, I still totally disagree with you, but maybe we should keep working and talk about this more later?" she suggested hopefully. Marley had gone through friends, like, a ton before coming to RMI, because she was always moving between her mum and her dad and it had been hard to keep in touch with other kids when she was so caught up in the new places she went to. So she had lost friends just from being apart, but she had never lost a friend over an actual disagreement, and she didn't want Claudia to be the first.

"I'll draw a new one," she half-offered, half-declared, sticking her hand in the box. Feeling around, Marley plucked out a slip of paper and unfolded it. "It says knitting." Having read it aloud, she set it on top of the marriage paper between them. "D'you wanna go first this time?" She managed a smile at Claudia. It was a little forced, which she could tell because her eyes didn't feel happy, and it was weird to smile without being properly happy, but it was still a smile.
