Admitting your weakness already?

Marissa was less than on time to the mandatory Cultural Studies lesson which had left Rose Farnon sitting next to Unpronouncable Welsh Name Owen and pointedly ignoring that fact. She hadn’t spoken to Myfanwy since the girl’s first day at RMI, but she didn’t need to. After the conversation with Myffi (which she had obviously dished to Marissa about), Rose had come to the conclusion that the comment Myffi had made about Holland was super homophobic and that consequently Rose was against her inclusion in their friend group. Marissa hadn’t responded quite as strongly as Rose had, but Rose was used to being the more outspoken one in their group. Regardless, Rose was pretty sure Marissa wasn’t going to do the thing she’d done with Russell where she’d decided to make him one of them.

But all that aside, Rose was really annoyed that Marissa had left her to sit with Myffi and when Marissa rushed in looking a bit rumpled, Rose raised an eyebrow. That, combined with Ruben’s late entrance - Rose’s stomach jerked a little but she decided to ignore it. You told Marissa it was fine to make out with Ruben. The whole Ruben situation was weird and it made Rose feel a little uncomfortable when she thought about it, so she’d mostly avoided him thus far into the school year, barring their discussion at the Opening Feast. Which had only made things weirder, which had made her avoid him more. It was a cycle that Rose wasn’t entirely sure how to address.

And then the lesson began and Rose decided that there were worse things than being stuck next to Myffi in a class. Or rather, a worse thing. And that thing was being stuck next to Myffi in this class.

Somehow, despite the fact that the subject of the class was awful and uncomfortable to begin with, fake-Blair had managed to make it even worse by talking around every conceivable thing possible. Looking around, Rose saw more than a few faces that clearly agreed with her feelings on the substitute. Or the subject matter. Whatever. As time continued to wear on in a manner that seemed endless, the blonde sixth-year found herself increasingly engaged in the folds of the black-and-red skirt she was wearing rather than continuing to engage in any way with the rest of the class.

And that was until Blair walked in with an actual baby, held it up to the class, and explained the most horrifying thing Rose could possibly imagine followed by the most horrifying group of pairings she could possibly imagine. Emmett and Ruben? Emmett was probably going to die. Holland and Camilla? Rose could only hope Camilla was going to die. And finally - her and Myffi.

It was over. It was all over. Her mark was going to be dependent on some hippie bumpkin who thought chickens had rights (Rose had done her research on Myffi’s food preferences out of curiosity later that day). Her hithertofore perfect marks were going to be marred because the idiot sitting next to her wanted to make sure their fake baby had access to fake baby formula made without the labour of house-elves or some such nonsense. Rose gritted her teeth, tucked a strand of hair that had escaped from her french braid behind her ear, then smiled in a particularly pained way at her partner. Her partner for the next two months. Who had just pulled the creepiest baby doll that Rose had ever seen out of the box. Fan-bloody-tastic.

“Let me see that,” Rose said, grabbing the baby off Myffi’s desk and holding it upside-down by one ankle. After a beat, the blank face of the baby morphed sickeningly quickly into something that vaguely resembled what Rose could imagine her own child might look like. She yelped and dropped it on its head and it began to cry.

The Aquila stared at the thing in disbelief. What kind of sadistic monster was Professor Blair, anyway?

  • I can't face it - Myfanwy Owen, Mon Aug 14 14:17
Taking Cultural Studies had seemed liked a good idea to the most recent transfer student because even though she had grown up in a household that was both magical and Muggle, with one parent each... more

Rose was her partner for the whole project, which was weird at first, because both teachers had definitely clarified that you needed a man and a woman to make a baby, and their group was almost... more

“Bottle?” Rose said weakly, in response to the baby crying and Myffi’s somewhat horrified question. “Have we got one of those?” When Dade had been born, Rose had been six years old and therefore old... more

Rose actually had some good suggestions like maybe she’d been around babies before and knew a bit about what would make them stop crying. A bottle was a good idea, babies had milk, everyone knew... more

”Is it because your Mum died having a baby?” Rose looked up from the fake baby and stared at Myffi blankly. What did that have to do with anything? Admittedly, childbirth wasn’t the safest process,... more
