That’s a better attitude

Camilla was being huffy. Well, then, if that was how this project was going to go, so be it. Professor Blair had, Holland noticed, paired all the members of their friendgroup with other people. Ruben and Emmett was far and away the most doomed partnership, but they were pretty sure Kaye and Danny didn’t get along well either. Danny could be trusted with a baby, but Holland had some doubts about Kaye.

Also, was Kaye wearing the smoking jacket Danny had lost at the sleepover party? Huh.

Using purple ink (to match the nail polish), Holland blocked off Camilla’s tutoring and workout times on the schedule. Camilla was only taking four classes and they were all classes Holland was also taking, so Holland noted that as well. “Okay, so you can take the doll while I’m in History of Magic, Magical Sciences, and Astronomy,” which meant Camilla would get the doll on nights when astronomy classes met, and the morning after. That might interfere with two of Camilla’s morning workouts, but Holland didn’t really see a way to avoid that unless they made a morning switch, which seemed pointless. “If you could take it during Spellwork,” the class Holland cared the most about, “then I’ll have it during Defense, Arithmancy, and Runes.” Holland would take the doll Friday nights and Saturdays, and Camilla could have it Sundays, and the schedule basically worked out with equal inconvenience to both Holland and Camilla, which was what a parenting project was supposed to be. The division of labor in most marriages probably wasn’t fifty-fifty, but it was probably more egalitarian when the partners didn’t really like each other and weren’t committed to doing favors for one another.

Although Holland thought their parents’ marriage was probably about equal, and they liked each other. Mom did most of the cleaning and fixing things because magic, Dad did grocery shopping and laundry because he was very particular about fabric softener, and they both cooked but Mom was the only one who baked. Childcare before Holland was old enough to stay home alone had mostly been Mom, but Dad was in charge on the weekends. It was easier for Mom during the week because she owned the shop where she worked, so she could just have Holland playing behind the counter while she helped customers. A lot of her longtime regulars apparently remembered Holland from when they were a baby and happily reminded them of this fact every time they saw Holland in the shop.

The last thing Holland expected from Camilla right now was an apology about her mood, but here they were. Holland arched perfectly-sculpted eyebrows in mild surprise and then shrugged. “It’s fine. I’m pretty sure no one wants to be here. Including him,” Holland said, flicking their eyes toward the substitute professor with amusement. Professor Ofosu looked like he wanted a trapdoor to open under him and he didn’t even care what was under it.

“Agreed. It looks like everyone else’s babies get faces and turn on when they’ve both touched them,” said Holland. “I’ll go get the supplies from Professor Ofosu while you… wake it up,” they suggested, making a vague hand gesture to illustrate that as they got up. Ugh. Holland was so not okay with the uncanny valley thing that was going on right now.
