I won't be got again!

It seemed as though Myffi was more willing to be enterprising about this situation that Rose was, or at the very least was willing to take the opportunity to ditch the crying doll under that pretense. Rose took the baby that was practically shoved at her and stared at it. It kept crying. It actually looked weirdly like Dade had when he was very young, with the dark hair. Rose held the baby at arm’s length and it wailed louder and started kicking its little feet. Rose sighed. She didn’t want kids, had never wanted kids, and was extremely unlikely to do anything that might involve the acquisition of kids. Except, apparently, be in the sixth year at RMI. In passing, Rose wondered what sort of accident had necessitated the addition of this class to the curriculum; had someone really been that stupid?

With a sigh, Rose settled the baby in her arms as though it were a real baby. It settled down a little bit, but kept insistently crying as though to remind her it hadn’t been fed yet or whatever. She gritted her teeth. She was aware she hadn’t fed it yet. You would have thought that Professor Blair would have given them a fighting chance at first or something to prevent the screaming.

But Myffi had returned and was mixing up the formula, with little complaint or comment about the nature of its origins, much to Rose’s relief. The sixth year took the bottle from her partner and popped it into the fake baby’s mouth. Now otherwise occupied, it seemed to lose interest in screaming. On the other hand, Myffi decided to take a sudden interest in talking, which Rose was almost less thrilled by. Surprisingly, though, there was still no comment on the organic this or that. Maybe Myffi was less obsessed with that nonsense than she’d originally seemed.

“It’s been a long time,” Rose replied. “I was six when my youngest brother was born, and my mum died having him. We had a nanny obviously but I still spent a lot of time taking care of him. I’m not good at babies,” she hastened to say, “I don’t want any of my own or anything but when babies cry it’s usually their bottle or their nappies. At least when they’re this little,” Rose added, adjusting the bottle. She had no actual idea of how old the baby was, but “couldn’t walk yet” was the important distinguisher here. “You’ll get the hang of it, it’s just going to be annoying to cart it around to class, that sort of thing. Which is presumably the point, anyway.”

  • SURPRISE! - Myfanwy, Thu Aug 17 15:56
Rose actually had some good suggestions like maybe she’d been around babies before and knew a bit about what would make them stop crying. A bottle was a good idea, babies had milk, everyone knew... more

        • No really, that's ok - Rose, Tue Aug 29 10:19
”Is it because your Mum died having a baby?” Rose looked up from the fake baby and stared at Myffi blankly. What did that have to do with anything? Admittedly, childbirth wasn’t the safest process,... more

Rose said she wanted a career and that made sense, and it was also one of the first three reasons Myfanwy had thought of for a person not wanting a baby. Obviously it was possible to have a career... more

Myffi agreed offhandedly to watching the baby when Rose was busy, which the sixth year actually felt mildly guilty about, to her surprise. She suspected that Myffi didn’t understand how much of... more
