Nothing, apparently

Kaye was being even more sullen and unhelpful than usual. That was really saying something. Dardanius was starting to believe that she really wasn’t going to do the project, and refuse to put her hand anywhere near the doll. The sudden turn in her countenance and her referring to him as an ass was more the Kaye he was used to, but not in keeping with the Kaye that had been next to him up to this point in the class. Danny was obviously going to have to give up on trying to keep up with the fifth year; she was an enigma. He kind of felt like he was being punished for his politeness - he’d called her Miss Packman and been gifted in return a look that could at least maim, if not kill him completely. Then, against all odds, she went and touched the doll anyway.

Not sure whether he was more surprised, relieved or just plain unsettled by this point, Danny watched with curiosity as the doll morphed into something more lifelike. Its eyes were closed and it wriggled a bit like it - she - was sleeping. Not an heir, spoke an unbidden voice in his head he decidedly to pointedly ignore from now until forever. Otherwise the features were unremarkable - Danny couldn’t say whether it looked anything like him or like Kaye - it just looked like a baby. They all looked more or less the same.

“Does it have hair?” Danny looked at Kaye, who wasn’t looking at the baby. Kaye who was wearing a wig, as she always did. He decided to let it pass. Kaye obviously didn’t want to make a deal out of it, and it was none of Danny’s business. He might hold back on the teasing. Just for today.

“Yeah, she has hair,” he replied as casually as Kaye had asked. Just a thin layer of sort of wispy, sandy blonde hair, a similar shade to his father’s, covering a pinkish scalp. “I’m gonna guess at brown eyes,” he said, because he hadn’t seen them yet, and he hadn’t studied his genetics sufficiently to know if he could spawn a child - fake or otherwise - with eyes in another hue. Gently taking his hand off the infant’s chest in efforts not to disturb it. “And excellent taste in smoking jackets.”

  • Know what? - Kaye, Mon Aug 21 15:14
Danny didn’t argue back about the jacket, which was just annoying. What was the point of wearing this around him if he didn’t care? Ugh, what a waste of her time. She didn’t know why she wanted to... more

      • You know nothing - Kaye, Fri Aug 25 14:10
The baby had hair. That information was enough to get Marissa to glance over at the tiny thing in front of them. It – she – seemed to be sleeping, which was great news. Most of their classmates... more
        • Shows what you know - Danny, Fri Aug 25 16:16
“What would anyone really need with a smoking jacket?” Danny chuckled in reply, keeping his voice low because the baby thing seemed to stir a little at Kaye’s voice. He didn’t know what to do with it ... more
          • More than you - Kaye, Sat Aug 26 10:12
Danny knew some tiny humans, so that was good. Kaye was very comfortable letting him take over most of the work, then. He would’ve been doing so anyway, because she didn’t care about this, but it... more

There were inevitably some other time commitments they would need to negotiate, like Duelling Club, and Danny didn’t know whether Kaye had any regular extra-curricular activities at school or off... more
