You know nothing

The baby had hair. That information was enough to get Marissa to glance over at the tiny thing in front of them. It – she – seemed to be sleeping, which was great news. Most of their classmates seemed to have a screaming baby right off the bat. Maybe this frighteningly life-like doll would be chill after all. And, wow, it had sandy blonde hair too. It was the same color as Kaye’s hair was. She’d gotten that from Papa, who had the messiest sandy hair anyone had ever seen.

She took her hand off of the baby and tucked a strand of bright pink behind her ear, watching it almost curiously. Danny made a joke about smoking jackets, and it almost made her crack a smile. Almost.

“What would a baby need with a smoking jacket?” Kaye asked almost teasingly. The baby squirmed slightly at the sound of her voice, so Kaye held back on the teasing. She seemed to settle again, which the Aquila found very impressive, since there was so much crying and noise in this classroom. Maybe she’d still get her own naps in during this class after all.

Kaye never had siblings or tiny children in her life. Her dads probably wanted another kid, but they had their hands full with Kaye. She didn’t have friends, either, so she never got to hang out with younger siblings. Papa didn’t have much family in the States, and Dad’s family never really got over the Married to a Man (also, married to a white man, which added a whole other layer to the whole situation) Thing. They were all they had, really. There was no room for babies to appear in their lives. Sometimes, she saw younger ones at dinner parties and stuff with Papa’s lawyer friends, but even those were potty trained and old enough to keep themselves entertained; they needed very little care.

“Let’s say I was going to do this project with you,” she said quietly, making sure not to disturb the sleeping doll baby doll, “I guess we could… make a schedule. Or something. I take a lot of classes. And we should figure out a name. I’ve never been around babies, or small children, so hopefully you know what you’re doing.”

“What would anyone really need with a smoking jacket?” Danny chuckled in reply, keeping his voice low because the baby thing seemed to stir a little at Kaye’s voice. He didn’t know what to do with it ... more

Danny knew some tiny humans, so that was good. Kaye was very comfortable letting him take over most of the work, then. He would’ve been doing so anyway, because she didn’t care about this, but it... more
