Myffi agreed offhandedly to watching the baby when Rose was busy, which the sixth year actually felt mildly guilty about, to her surprise. She suspected that Myffi didn’t understand how much of Rose’s waking hours fell into the ‘busy’ category. Quidditch, dueling club, swimming for conditioning, coursework, class, work - it took up a lot of time, and dumping the fake baby on Myffi for that long seemed a bit unfair to Rose. More surprisingly, Rose cared that it seemed a bit unfair, almost as though Myffi were someone she cared even the most miniscule amount about. Weird.

“Right, we’ve got magizoobotany and spellwork together so I suppose we’ll just like...sit next to each other or something? And I can take it sometimes if you want to like, I don’t know, go smell organic fertilizer on Pearl Street,” Rose wasn’t sure what fake hippies who had been assigned fake babies wanted to do in their off time. “Or like yeah, if you get a job or join a club or whatever.” Holland hadn’t mentioned suddenly acquiring a roommate, so Rose figured she could safely bet that Myffi was in a single. Also, to be fair, Rose was already planning on spending a fair amount of her time with ‘custody’ of the fake baby pawning it off on Kit. Marissa’s younger sister helped her with babysitting the Hier kids sometimes, and she often went on about how she was old enough to do it on her own. Rose was pretty sure she could convince Kit that taking care of a fake baby was a good demonstration of her responsibility. “And yeah I’ll ask Marissa first, if we can coordinate schedules so I only have to deal with screaming things in my room sometimes and not every day of the week that would be fantastic.”

Then Rose’s partner suggested naming the creepy doll and Rose pulled a face. She had no inclination whatsoever to do so, feeling perfectly comfortable with referring to it as ‘it’ and ‘the fake baby’ when applicable, but Myffi was already referring to the thing as a ‘her’ which was, Rose supposed, just another demonstration of her fake hippieness. “Sure,” the Aquila agreed, when Myffi suggested that they name the thing Hannah. Rose really didn’t care, and at least she could pronounce and spell ‘Hannah’ unlike any number of Welsh names she’d encountered in her life. Sometimes trying to figure out Welsh anything was like sticking your hand into the bag of tiles in Scrabble and trying to read what came out.

“Oh,” Rose realized she’d neglected to answer Myffi’s question earlier, as they’d jumped right into creepy fake baby logistics. “I want to do spell design and engineering at a corporation or university,” Rose said proudly. Although she knew she wanted to go into spellwork for as long as she could remember, it had taken a fair amount of time and a few discussions with the counselor for her to decide that spell design and engineering was the right course of study for her.

Rose said she wanted a career and that made sense, and it was also one of the first three reasons Myfanwy had thought of for a person not wanting a baby. Obviously it was possible to have a career... more
