Oh, I can never agree with you

He sighed exaggeratedly when Camilla went around his foot to take her bag back, but didn’t fight it. Riling people up was fun, but he wasn’t in the mood to get kicked out of class, which might happen if Wilson caught wind of his teasing. Wilson was one of the more serious professors. Not in the whole school, but definitely out of the classes Ruben was taken, especially since Ivy Rasnick had left (cue a disgruntled “boo” for the loss of her aggressive lesson plans and also that curvy body; her replacement was semi-attractive and way less than semi-intelligent when it came to the Dark Arts, for obvious reasons).

“Right, of course, keep your secrets.” Ruben flapped a hand in an aimless, as-if-I-actually-care gesture and turned his attention back to the block on his desk. Leaning over, he unzipped his back on the floor and began rifling through it looking for a something to write with and/or on. Although he couldn’t hold back a smirk at Camilla’s next comment, or maybe it was more aimed at noticing how she was eyeing him up. The blonde knew he was attractive, and having others acknowledge it was satisfying. “Ja, you being clumsy and making a loud noise is enough to very briefly distract me from a plain lump of wood,” he confirmed sarcastically. “Of course this is a thing you should feel honoured by. Flattered, even. It is hard to be more interesting than wood.”

Jokes aside, wood was actually an interesting magical component. Wandwoods were the most obvious example, but other woods had in general a reaction to magic that was quite different from stone or earth, at least in his experience - presumably not as expansive as the professor but still presumably more than the other students. He rather doubted that anyone else in this room could claim spending, like, half their life outdoors. And yes, ‘half’ was a slight exaggeration; factoring in all those long hiking/camping excursions both within the curriculum at Durmstrang and more independently on his breaks, it was more like a third, Ruben estimated. But it got the point across. If he was making this point verbally to anyone in particular. Which he wasn’t, because the only people in the room whose opinions he cared about were currently partnered with each other and not paying him near enough attention.

Flattening out a slightly crumpled sheet of looseleaf on his desk, Ruben began sketching out the base for his runes. “So, if you were trespassing,” he stated aloud, not exactly aiming the question at Camilla (it was more of a rhetorical question aimed at the air in front of him) but assuming that she would answer him anyways because he was impossible to ignore, “would you prefer to be chewed up or impaled?” He might not overlay the two, at least not right away, and he already had made up his mind that the Biting Jinx was the way to go so whatever she said didn’t matter, but outside opinions were valuable. Supposedly. Really, he just wanted to jibe her, curious for her reaction.
