Pardon my lack of green thumbs

The new older girl in Lyra was pretty cool. Not as cool as Holland, duh, Holland was the best and had even promised to help Marley do something fun with her hair. They had already experimented a little, which had left Marley with a little stripe of slightly redder hair that was basically invisible against her kinky natural afro, and the newly-turned fourteen-year-old couldn’t wait for their next chance to experiment. She totally trusted Holland to do a great job, whatever they wound up doing, because Holland had been really honest in explaining that even though they knew tons about hair stuff they had never actually worked with hair like Marley’s before, and that plus Holland being super smart meant that they would be able to figure it out.

Anyways, the new girl in Lyra would never be quite as cool as Holland, but she was still cool and talked funny and she had the weirdest name ever that also just happened to start with an M, which overall made her alright in Marley’s books. She also had some really random ideas. Like an agriculture club! Who would’ve thought that they could, like, farm and whatever else agriculture clubs did in an underground school? Obviously the weather charms still let plants grow, otherwise there wouldn’t be a forest around the Pitch or even green grass, probably, even though it was still all kinda brown and mostly dead-looking at this time of year, but still. They were gonna do agriculture. At school. For fun.

She couldn’t wait!

“Hiiiii, Myffi!” she piped up cheerfully in response to the older girl’s greeting of the gathered students. Marley then quickly hushed up to listen, aimlessly fiddling with the long strings on her hoodie. She had picked her outfit very carefully for this meeting: old denim shorts, since she assumed they would be working in the dirt, and her over-the-knees Lyra-green socks for warmth, and a fun printed top with a hoodie, because layers were a good idea as the weather could sometimes change really fast on RMI’s grounds. And a sun visor, of course. It hadn’t looked super sunny when she peeked out her dorm window this morning, but the windows didn’t always line up with what the underground-outside really was like, so she thought it was smart to bring just in case. The visor had been a hand-me-down gift from her dad, who didn’t have big hair quite like Marley’s since it was sort of shaved and sort of Mohawked because apparently that was the style in his line of work, but his hair still meant that her dad only wore visors himself in order to protect his hair. In Marley’s case, the visor was necessary less for the sake of protecting her hair and more because she couldn’t fit all her hair under a normal cap.

Happily taking the pencil and paper parchment from Myffi (she’d never understood why wizards used parchment when, like, regular note binders worked just as well, but it was fine because parchment was fancy and made her feel sort of mysterious), Marley moved a little back so she wasn’t in anyone’s way and checked behind her and then plonked right down cross-legged. “This is so totally awesome!” she announced to no one in particular. But, when someone actually acknowledged her very rhetorical statement, Marley’s grin widened and she waved at them. “C’mon then, join me, let’s brainstorm together! What kinda foods do you wanna grow? I’d love pumpkins and, oooh, what about corn? We could grow big tall cornstalks and then have a proper maze, maybe! When I was a kid, my mum’s employee-type-person used to take me through the cornmazes whenever we were in rural areas at the right time of year,” she rambled enthusiastically. “They were so much fun, even with mosquitoes everywhere.” Marley had, it seemed, very quickly forgotten that the goal of agriculture was to grow stuff for eating rather than playing with. But who was to say they couldn’t have both?

Of course Glasses Farmgirl was capable of yammering on about spell theory as it pertained to plant growth without needing even to warm up. Of course. He should have been anticipating that, but at... more
