I guess I can participate a little

Wow, she was… excited about this. Alright, then. Nothing wrong with that. To each their own or whatever. It just gave him more to internally snicker about, although those internal snickerings did become external at one point, where she began going on about group meals and her restless bouncing intensified. Ruben stifled his laughter in order to quiz her, “The future? Why not sooner than that? Surely there are ways to make plants grow faster and better. Such as, you know. What we are here to study.” He unfolded one arm to gesture aimlessly, using a nonverbal charm to light up a burst of sparks from his fingers. “Magic,” he further emphasized, in case the point hadn’t gotten to her while she was off in her little farmgirl world.

Did Ruben actually have a clue about the capabilities or limits of magic in plant growth? Nope, of course not. While he was aware that herbology was a thing in some schools (or in RMI’s case, ‘magizoobotany’, because of course Americans had to be extra special about everything), it hadn’t exactly been a big deal at Durmstrang. Wand- and staff-woods were their primary focus when it came to plants; anything less hardy than a tree wasn’t worth mentioning in their classes. Something to do with being surrounded by a literal glacier.

He did, however, have more than a few clues about plants in general. Ruben’s formal education on the topic was very much nonexistent, but he’d had enough practical experience to know, for example, how not to poison oneself turning berries into sylt, or how to properly dig up roots, or how to kill skin season fish (that was totally relevant to plants). He also happened to be on friendly terms with his sister’s Muggle boyfriend, who in turn had been attempting to get on friendly terms with the alcoholic properties of wild tubers. That was a useful bit of knowledge. Or would be, once Joakim’s string of attempts had gone from ‘sometimes successful’ to ‘reliably successful’. Regardless.

“What would I like to grow?” Still feeling himself in a dramatic mood, Ruben’s thoughtful hum was accompanied by a thoughtful rubbing of his chin, both of which were entirely unnecessary as he already knew exactly what he wanted to grow. More accurately, what he wanted Glasses Farmgirl to grow, so that he could take part in the prep-and-consume bit. “Potatoes are I think a good choice. Very, how do you say it? Versatile.” He pronounced it verse-atill, which was a mistake. He also neglected to mention that one of the more interesting uses of potatoes was for making vodka, which was not a mistake. “And beets.” Supposedly beets could be used in making wine, although Jocke had only tried this once and had been too impatient to let it ferment for long enough. Wine was not nearly as interesting as vodka, but it was better than stew, which was the only other thing beets were good for.

“And also tobacco. Not for a bad thing like smoking, of course,” he insisted innocently because of course he didn’t have a pack of cigs in his hoodie pocket right now, “but because they are a good fertilizer and also a way of killing bugs. Natural is much better than dumb bug-killing sprays.” Ruben added this sentence mostly because it sounded like something Glasses Farmgirl would agree with, but he could privately admit that he agreed, too. Dumb capitalists with their dumb cheap chemicals in everything.

The person she was talking to was called Ruben, and actually Myffi didn't know him very well - she hadn't been there at RMI all that long, she didn't know most people very well, to be honest - but he ... more

        • But when do we get to the spirits? - Ruben, Tue Oct 17 17:43
Of course Glasses Farmgirl was capable of yammering on about spell theory as it pertained to plant growth without needing even to warm up. Of course. He should have been anticipating that, but at... more

Okay fine, Ruben did make a valid point about a serious obstacle that Myffi had been doing her best to overlook. Nothing about the climate at RMI was natural, because it was, in fact, underground and ... more
