Ludus supra praemium

Okay fine, Ruben did make a valid point about a serious obstacle that Myffi had been doing her best to overlook. Nothing about the climate at RMI was natural, because it was, in fact, underground and governed by weather charms. She knew she might need to supplement growth with irrigation and even artificial UV, since the sun obviously wasn’t going to get to her plants - just the fake rays of a fake sun. “Well you’ve got me there,” she conceded. But things could obviously still grow here, so she was going to try it.

She hadn’t, however, counted on the weather charms producing anything other than weather. “Jelly?” She repeated. She didn’t know if she believed him - she was starting to get the sense that maybe Ruben wasn’t a very serious person. “Actual jelly?” Laughter lit her eyes even though her expression was still trying to query the truth of the situation. It would be pretty funny if it did rain Jelly at school, although not very helpful for her plants.

Myfanwy skimmed over the sixth year’s comment that he was sensible, because she was becoming more certain by the minute that he was most certainly not sensible. He sounded interested in sugar beets though. “I don’t think we’ll actually be able to make sugar,” she confessed, “I don’t know much about the process, but maybe I could ask Rob,” she commented, more to herself than to Ruben. The fifth year did not get along with her potions professor but he did seem to be very clever as well as very stubborn. “But anyway you can use sugar beet for cooking like any other root vegetable.”

They seemed to enter into an animated discussion on the merits of tobacco. Myffi hadn’t tried Ruben’s proposed pesticide scheme, so she could not comment on its likely success. However she could, and would, comment on his other remarks. “Paranoia is a potential side effect,” she agreed, being careful to emphasise it was a possibility, not a guaranteed result. She’d never tried any, obviously, although Cledan’s boyfriend, Rowan, had been smoking some over midterm and he didn’t seem paranoid at all, “but smoking tobacco definitely causes cancer.” There was lots of studies about that, it was even printed on the packaging of commercially produced tobacco products.

“And okay, if you’re growing your own tobacco then it might not do any more harm to he planet than cannabis, but I bet you smoke tobacco” - she was guessing, but her estimate was astronomically supported by numerical fact - “produced by one of the hundreds of evil tobacco companies that pay their works terrible wages, poison them with pesticides, destroy surrounding eco systems, and massively overcharge consumers for an addictive, life-destroying product.” She blinked at him through the lenses of her round, rose gold framed spectacles. If she was wrong let him contradict her.

“Anyway,” she said, pleasantly, but still in a tone that indicated the discussion was over, “I’m not going to ask for permission to grow tobacco as part of an organic food project.” It wasn’t food; the matter was settled.

Of course Glasses Farmgirl was capable of yammering on about spell theory as it pertained to plant growth without needing even to warm up. Of course. He should have been anticipating that, but at... more

“Yes, actual sugar,” Myffi replied through a chuckle. Ruben was probably one of the masses who didn’t give any through to where his food came from, like sugar just existed rather than being grown and ... more
