Time to get a move on

It wouldn’t be true at all to say that Ruben had been expecting an intelligent and/or productive conversation when Kit bounced up to him, but from whatever level of intelligence and/or productivity he may have expected, the conversation so far wasn’t even reaching halfway up the wall. This kid was all over the place. One of his thick eyebrows was creeping higher with every new sentence that she came up with. He couldn’t tell whether the cocked eyebrow was more critical or amused, but it was somewhere around there.

First, she complimented his hair. A bit out of the blue, and not at all on theme with his question, but that didn’t faze him. Ruben was well aware of how impressive his hair was and acknowledgement of this was something he always welcomed, no matter how random its timing. Currently wearing it loose with two thin, moderately tight braids wrapped around each side of his scalp to keep the lot of it more in place, Kit’s words prompted an automatic head-shake, the long blonde locks sliding over his shoulders and briefly revealing the metal rod in his ear. He refrained from any more posturing, though. Compliments were something he would normally show off in response to, but Kit was his baby brother’s age. It wasn’t weird that she was complimenting his hair (that was normal, really), but him reacting to it would be very weird.

Then she revealed something very interesting. So Marissa, their team captain who had basically welcomed him on board with open arms this year, had also bribed her sister to hit him with a Bludger? “That sounds like a conflict of interest,” he interjected with a wry smirk. Yup, he was going to quiz Marissa on this when he got back to Aquila. “And not a fair price for you. Surely I am worth at least a crup.” None of the more seasoned players stood at a chance at knocking Ruben off his broom, in his own absolutely biased but realistic opinion (he was a martial arts genius and had amazing reflexes and did he need to continue the list?). A tiny first-year definitely didn’t. If Kit hypothetically knocked him off his broom, that would be literally doing the impossible, and Marissa would owe her way more than some lame puffskein.

(Apparently Emmett had a puffskein now, to replace their fake baby. It suited him. They were both floppy, shapeless animals with no proper ability to express themselves beyond pathetic, meaningless noises.)

Kit then announced that he was cute, and immediately followed it with the declaration that she couldn’t fulfill Marissa’s challenge right now and therefore they could partner up for class. Ruben couldn’t hold back a snort. “No killing when I am not on a broom. Okej, that sounds reasonable. But I am not ‘cute’. ‘Cute’ is a word for small animals, like baby cats and rabbits and gooses. This is not ‘cute’.” At the ‘this’, Ruben gestured broadly at himself - punk shirt, chains, spikes, and all. He took the opportunity to flex a sturdy bicep to further emphasize his point and also because Holland was nearby and then drew his wand, silently lighting the tip. “Lead on. Preferably into the darker forest where it is more exciting.”

Ruben’s arm was suddenly in the way of Kit’s helpful wand, so her spell (which worked!) hit him in the arm instead of where Kit had intended it to hit him, which was where she’d accidentally hit him... more
