“Marley, you are being ridiculous.”

Marley, who was increasingly feeling literally every single emotion/adjective/whatever except ridiculous, inhaled sharply at the accusation. The quiet gasp was matched by a sudden stinging around her eyeballs and jagging down the sides of her nose. It felt sort of like she was gonna sneeze, or maybe cry, except that didn’t make any sense because she wasn’t sick or sad right now, she was just mad and disappointed and--

Okay, maybe she was a bit sad. A big bit, like when you promised your mum you’d eat only a bit of cake before bed but then she came marching into your room later wanting to know why the cake pan was so empty. She’d meant what she said; Marley had never felt like she hated anyone before, or even anything, for that matter (with the exception of gross, slimy mushrooms, but that was just a food-hate and therefore totally different). To feel so upset with her ex-BFF Claudia - maybe it wasn’t quite the same type of feeling as people who hadn’t been happy even as babies felt like when they hated stuff, but on Marley’s Feelings Scale, this one right now weighed in at bad, bad, really really bad. But at least it wasn’t possible to feel even worse than this.

Oh, nope, wait, yes it was. “C-Connor asked you out?” The question came out in a bit of a squeaky voice, but Marley wasn’t paying too much attention to that since this was something she had never considered. Well, she hadn’t considered at all how Claudia and Connor might’ve started dating, because the most important part was the fact that they were. So this added something new entirely.

“Why- why didn’t he just tell me?” Marley didn’t think she even knew a word to describe her emotions right now, but they seemed to have been tipped out of her brain and onto her face. And also out of her face. With a loud sniff, she scrubbed at her eye with her fingers, which did a fine job of smearing the water around and demonstrating the benefits of not wearing eye makeup. “He, I thought he was just flirting back the whole time! Like, he agreed to date and then ran off,” she pointed out. Further explanation was unnecessary; how else could she possibly have interpreted that aside from the shyer boy trying to flirt with her?

“And why didn’t you just tell me? Or, like, why did you start dating him at all? You knew I liked him!” It seemed necessary to repeat because it seemed Claudia wasn’t getting it. “Girl code! You never ever ever date someone if your best friend likes him too, because that’s, like, a huge betrayal and makes her sad and it’s so awkward-” Marley sniffled again and gave up on wiping off her eyes, because clearly it wasn’t accomplishing anything. But of course she kept talking despite being in this state. Some people were the type of cryers who couldn’t talk through it, and fortunately Marley wasn’t one of them. Not being able to talk while crying sounded very frustrating and it would’ve probably just made her cry more.

“If there was someone you liked, I’d never even think of liking them too, cause you're my friend and I'd probably like you more than them anyways. And if it was anyone else, I’d be totally supportive, I swear! But… This is really hard,” she concluded her spiralled rambling, digging a Kleenex out of her jeans pocket so she could blow her nose. Blinking blearily over the top of the tissue, she noticed a faerie fly over Claudia’s head. “Faerie.” She pointed at it with her pinky finger, hands still occupied.

Marley sounded like she didn’t believe her. Why wouldn’t she believe that Connor had asked Claudia? Except that it was, in fact, a lie. There was no way Marley could know that. There was also no... more
