It seemed like things between Claudia and Marley were more or less back to normal; they were hugging and Marley was talking too much (and she wasn’t crying any more), and Claudia didn’t really know what her friend was prattling on about, so even though it still felt strained and unusual, Claudia was optimistic they were going to be okay. It offered the blonde girl some relief from her guilt, and anxiety about being lonely and excluded. There had definitely been a time, possibly as recently as last year, when Claudia would have thought it a blessing to be not on speaking terms with Marley Chapman, but despite her peculiar ideas, and savage upbringing, and inexplicable propensity for physical contact, the Lyra was probably one of the nicest people Claudia had ever met. There, she’d thought it. She didn’t think she would be saying it out loud any time soon, but she knew how lucky she was to have Marley as a friend, and that her friend would forgive her so readily for dating the very person that would cause the most contention.

Claudia also took muted pleasure in Marley's declaration that she really didn’t want to talk to Connor. Somebody had to, they couldn’t let this nonsense continue to disrupt all their lives for any greater duration than was unavoidable, and Claudia would prefer to have the discussion herself, rather than to hear its conclusions drawn second-hand. She was already planning to discuss it with him at their regular dinner that evening, when Marley presented a counter-offer to her standing arrangement (Claudia suspected Marley wasn’t aware of the conflict, and she was just trying to sustain their friendship, but if she did know then it was a very carefully conceived and delivered plan to talk to Connor before Claudia had the opportunity. Now she didn’t want to imply her friend was in any way unintelligent, but there was such a slim possibility that Marley was capable of such subtlety that Claudia considered it negligible).

“Yes, let’s have dinner together tonight,” Claudia agreed readily. Before this class, she would have considered Connor innocent in all dealings with Marley of any variety, but there was most certainly something occurring of a most dubious nature between the two of them, and until she could get to the bottom of it, Claudia was reticent to regard Connor in a positive light. It seemed inarguable at this point that he had deceived one of them, and although she had never heard of it before and barely understood it in its basest description, Claudia strongly suspected that this ‘Girl Code’ Marley had referenced would not be readily forgiving of a boy who jeopardised the friendship of two friends by means of intentional deception. “We can talk about anything you like,” she added, nodding in her enthusiasm to make Marley as at ease with her as possible. Even though they had forgiven each other - verbally, at least - there was no guarantee that it would be plain sailing from here: Marley might remember at any time that Claudia had started seeing the boy she had a crush on, and not told her about it. She might remember that for a minute, at least, she had hated her.

Yeah, the hug helped. Really helped. Hugging Claudia wasn’t exactly an unusual event, although it didn’t happen nearly as often as it could have, in her opinion, but considering that they weren’t in... more
