Arguably I just hit the bullseye

Kit was very confused, and not just because she’d totally bounced off Ruben instead of grabbing the faerie behind him. She was also confused because Ruben had just made the weirdest sound ever and looked like he was in a lot of pain. She hadn’t done anything! She’d just missed a little bit aiming for a faerie! Kit glanced around, but they seemed to be largely alone in the immediate area, although she could hear a bunch of other kids talking and some yelling. Maybe she should go and get Aunt Cindra? But Kit couldn’t imagine that Aunt Cindra could help very much, she wasn’t very focused. Like Kit! Kit wasn’t very focused. It was pretty unusual that she was this focused on Ruben but there was clearly something wrong.

Plus Ruben was speaking in some strange language that Kit didn’t know but officially wanted to know because it sounded really cool! But maybe that was because Ruben was talking in a way that was very intense and Kit thought intense things could be really cool. Like Ruben, Ruben was pretty intense and pretty cool at the same time. Or sometimes when you just had really purple paint and mixed it with black paint and then put it on a piece of paper and said that was art for art class and then sometimes Dad got called in to talk to the art teacher about how Kit said it really was art and refused to do anything else in class but see what everyone else was doing which was apparently not what you were supposed to do in art class but that was fine because Kit didn’t have to go to art class anymore. Now she went to History of Magic which was actually worse but she was drawing a comic about the Goblin Wars because there were like ten billion of them and there needed to be a more interesting way to learn about it.

It seemed like Ruben was mad but he was also hurt so Kit figured he didn’t mean it when he called her stupid, like how Marissa didn’t really mean it when she got mad at Kit for saying things about school broomsticks. Which Kit didn’t understand still but she knew not to say it in front of Marissa or maybe at all. Maybe Ruben would know. Maybe she would ask Ruben once he felt better.

“Do you want me to get Aunt Cindra?” Kit asked, sitting up. Ruben was grabbing his crotch. Oh no! Had she bumped into him really hard? It hadn’t seemed really hard to her but maybe she as just bad at figuring out how hard she was jumping at someone. “or let me help okay?” Kit didn’t wait for Ruben’s permission before drawing her wand and pointing at him. “Glacius,” she said, chirpily, waving the wand. Hopefully it would make it colder where Ruben was holding himself, because cold was the way to make ouchie things feel better. Of course, given that Kit had only had approximately a 30% success rate practising the charm in class, it might have been more advisable for her to get Aunt Cindra first. Oh well!
