“Hejhej! Good mooooooorning sunshine; what a beautiful day to get sweaty!”

Every time Kaye was greeted in the mornings by an obnoxious Ruben, she gave him the deadliest glares she could manage. He’d always been immune, though, which was the worst. By now she’d stopped trying to detour to the Finer Diner for coffee (and, perhaps, distracting him long enough that they wouldn’t have time to go workout), because he’d always declare how they did not need caffeine to function; they had adrenaline! The body’s natural caffeine! What a pineappling dork.

It was the morning after the beach party, and Kaye was still feeling really off about it. Plus, her body hurt from playing volleyball. This is why her kind of sport was competitive eating. And speed dating. And shoplifting. This actual physical activity was too much, and her body was just not into it. The doctors said she’d have fatigue from the thyroid issues, but they’d said nothing about sore joints. It took her a little extra time, and a lot of whining, to convince herself to get out of bed. She’d thrown her pillow on top of Heather for good measure; scaring the other girl awake was just enough to make her feel better. Not entirely better, because she hurt and Ruben had spent the whole party flirting with Holland, who flirted back, and she’d had feelings in front of Danny and ugh. Ugh.

She changed into her favorite workout outfit, which included a white sports bra with straps that almost resembled a body cage. It was very sexy and the straps were the only reason she wore the white fabric; she didn’t think she owned anything else in white. She pulled on a pair of black fitted jogger pants with red stripes down the side, the only pair of (very fashionable) sneakers she owned, a long light brown wig, and a red knitted hat with cat ears. She finished off the look with red lips, a dark and blended smoky eye, the heaviest eyeliner she could find with wings that could cut a man, mascara, and black nail polish. Everything was set in place quickly with magic, and she dried the nail polish that way as well. Ruben could make fun of her for looking nice while they worked out all he wanted. If she was going to die, she wanted to look good.

Ruben took the exercise thing way too seriously. He’d overheard the doctors say that she needed to do daily exercise in the hopes that it would help her fatigue (and she, very unwillingly, would agree that it sometimes worked), and he decided that that would be His Responsibility. It gave them more time together, so that was a plus, but it was still exercise, and was the cost really worth the reward?

As usual, the two of them snarked the whole way to the Outdoor Classroom. There were plenty of mildly affection “I hate you” and “you suck” phrases said from Kaye’s side of the conversation. And, as usual, once they arrived, Kaye unceremoniously collapsed onto the ground and stared up at the sky.

“We played volleyball yesterday,” she pointed out with a whine, “Do we have to do this today? I’m sore and hungry.”
