I don't think anything about this is going to be easy

Kaye thought it’d feel good to kiss Ruben. Everyone made such a big deal over kissing. It seemed like that was one of the only things the upper years consistently interested themselves in. It was all about who was kissing who, who wanted to kiss who, who got into more interesting activities with others. Everything seemed to be all hype, though, or maybe she’d initiated wrong.

She thought Ruben was supposed to, like, do something, but instead he was frozen. The Aquila didn’t know if that was a good or bad thing. Either she was so naturally good that he’d been stunned, or she was so awful that he was disgusted and just wanted it to be over. There were probably a bunch of other reasons, but she didn’t know what those could be. This wasn’t what she thought her first kiss would be like. Plus, Ruben talked such a big game; there was no way he was just… what?

After a moment, she pulled away (because no one ever said how long a kiss was supposed to last) and looked at him. She felt suddenly aware at how close they were. He was basically on top of her, in a position that could be really intimate in a matter of seconds, and they were both not incredibly clothed. She and Ruben touched all the time. They held hands and cuddled on the couch. Even so, she’d never felt this physically close to someone before. She hoped that her cheeks weren’t turning red or anything; that’d just be embarrassing.

"Was that your show of appreciation for all my hard work training you?"

“Um…” she answered lamely. Her blue eyes searched his grin for some kind of answer, because he clearly wasn’t as happy that this happened as she’d hoped. Was something off, or was she overthinking? She tried to think of something witty to say, but all she could do was sort of match his smile. At the very least, she’d managed to distract them from the workout like she’d planned. That was good. Right? Yeah, totally--

Oh, he was kissing her now. Kaye leaned back in; she had no idea what she was doing. How was this supposed to work? Was she opening her mouth enough? Or too much? This felt like how kissing looked, so she was probably doing that part right. What were you supposed to do with your hands? Ruben was touching her face, and she was using her arms to keep herself propped up. Was she supposed to be touching him? Were her eyes supposed to be open or closed? Kaye didn’t open her eyes to see what his were doing. She didn’t know what she was doing, and that was a very weird feeling for the Aquila.

Plus, he hesitated. People weren’t supposed to do that if they wanted to kiss each other.

Kaye pulled away again, backing up a little this time so their closeness wasn’t going to be as distracting. It was still distracting, because look at him, but this way it could be a little less palpable. Someone was supposed to say something now. Right?

“Ruben?” Kaye managed a small, almost vulnerably nervous smile, “So… was that okay?” She laughed a little, incredibly aware of how weird everything felt now. What did she just do? “I’m not really that bad, am I?”
