Even if they didn’t get to eat the food, Nolan would still participate in AgriClub. Pearl Street was pretty cool, especially now that Nolan could go up and see Quint a few blocks away, but a city was a city. Despite its being underground, RMI’s outdoor classroom felt more like the Ramsey’s rural Oklahoma ranch than the above-ground streets of Boulder did. Nolan felt relaxed and healthy when he was working in nature, whether he’d brought homework outside or was helping with AgriClub.

Getting to eat the fruits and vegetables of their labors was an added bonus.

You couldn’t have an RMI event without a bonfire, apparently, but this one was smaller and more normally-colored than the ones from the opening feast. It reminded Nolan more of the bonfires his family had sometimes. They usually cooked on a grill, not right over the fire. Nolan didn’t cook much himself, but was happy to adapt for a good meal. He used a spell to poke a couple of holes in the skin of his potato, because the steam had to get out somehow. Then he folded it up in foil (he was surprised Myffi had allowed something so disposable, but there really was no other good way to bake a potato, and besides, they could probably reuse it somehow) with carrots and some herbs, and levitated it into the fire to bake. Topped with tomatoes in herb sauce, it was delicious.

As he sat on a bench to eat his baked potato, Nolan noticed that a few non-regulars had come out to the event. He spotted one or two of the first years, and Buckley, who never seemed to make it to the AgriClub meetings that required hard work but often talked about the “impact” of the club to anyone who would listen. Good turnout, overall, if some of them joined. Nolan had started to think about what the club would do after Myffi graduated, and he’d come to the conclusion that he was probably going to have to take over since none of the other schmucks here were up to it. Well, Marley was all right—he knew better than to say so around Connor and Claudia, but the kind of energetic, manic delight she and Myffi shared was enjoyable in other people—but she didn’t know as much about farming and gardening as Nolan did.

Having finished his baked potato, Nolan recycled his tinfoil in the labeled bin and went off in search of Myffi. He found her sitting with Leo Harris. They were awful close, and for a half moment Nolan hesitated, but Myffi had definitely been beckoning him over so he obligingly joined them.

“Whaddaya got?” he asked, seeing the paper bag. Without waiting for an answer, he plunged his hand in—Myffi had seemed to be offering an invitation—and pulled it out with a brownie. Nice. Nolan took a bite of the fudgy dessert. “That’s a good brownie,” he commented appreciatively.

Cledan sounded like something you might call your owl not a person so of course it made sense that one of Myffi’s friends and/or relative had such a name. She was Welsh after all and it seemed to him ... more

Leo took a brownie, eagerly consuming almost the whole, roughly cut chunk in one bite. He didn’t object to its taste - history had taught Myfanwy that if Leo didn’t like something he would say so -... more

Leo couldn’t pinpoint the exact time Nolan Ramsey decided to join them. One moment it was just Myffi and him, happily hanging out and then Leo looked around and Nolan was just there . Leo could never ... more

This felt like a moment. There was a beautiful dusk, and a crackling bonfire, and Leo was super close. They’d been close before, looking at the same page in a textbook, or even closer, when Leo had... more

              • Nah, too bitter - Leo, Sun Jul 29 11:42
Leo’s head was spinning and it had little to do with the brownies. Myffi had just kissed him. Of course Leo had wanted Myffi to kiss him but now that it had happened he wasn’t sure what to do about... more
                • Would you prefer something sweet? - Myffi, Mon Jul 30 03:43
Leo’s reaction was just to sort of look at her. Myffi guessed that, like her, he was trying to figure out what this new twist was all about. Then he laughed a bit, albeit nervously, and Myffi decided ... more
