Leo took a brownie, eagerly consuming almost the whole, roughly cut chunk in one bite. He didn’t object to its taste - history had taught Myfanwy that if Leo didn’t like something he would say so - so she presumed it was acceptable to him, and returned her attention to finishing consuming her own treat. Then, “Nothing’s happening. Is something happening for you?” Leo asked.

Myffi smiled at him, trying not to laugh. “Just relax,” she recommended. Anecdotally, she’d heard this particular sort of brownie could feed paranoia, so although this wasn’t anything she had ever experienced herself, she didn’t want Leo to start worrying and have a bad time of it. She patted his shoulder in a vaguely comforting gesture just as Nolan joined them. He enquired about the contents of the bag, still open in Myffi’s hand, but did not wait for her to respond before dipping his hand into the paper bag, withdrawing a brownie, and starting to munch it.

“That’s a good brownie,” Nolan said. Myfanwy’s eyes were laughing as she smiled serenely. If Nolan objected to consuming any constituent part of the brownie, it was too late to do anything about that now.

“There’s a couple more where that came from,” the seventh year assured him, even as she rolled the top over the brown paper bag and dropped it, for the time being, back into her canvas bag. The small traybake had been cut up into six sizable chunks, half of which had now been consumed. “I feel obliged to inform you that these brownies are legal only for medicinal use where you come from,” Myffi said lightly to Nolan, before following Leo’s example and gazing into the frolicking flames of the bonfire. She exhaled, and settled into a semi-stupor, feeling the gentle heat from the fire, smelling the lingering scents of food and charcoal, only roused by the occasional laugh or shout from the few students who still remained.

When Leo looked at her, he genuinely looked about the most relaxed Myfanwy had ever seen him. He’d been enthusiastic talking about Quidditch last term, and had seemed contented when showing her how to fly, but there was always something preventing him from letting go; maybe frustration at not being on the team, but that was just a guess. Perhaps it was sitting out in the calm evening with no responsibilities or resentments, or maybe the brownies were having some effect on him, as her Housemate looked completely at ease now. “I hate plants,” Leo abruptly informed her. Far from being affronted, Myffi was entertained. Her calm smile spread into a bemused grin. Microwave meals were disgusting. Did people really like them? Surely not as much as beautiful, nurtured, natural plants.

She looked Leo square in the eyes, and said, “I love plants.” Her tone was serious, almost daring him to argue, but she was still smiling. He leaned a little closer, and she thought he might take that dare, but if he was planning on saying anything, he didn’t do it immediately. So instead of building counter arguments, Myfanwy noticed that his eyes were hazel. “Your eyes are hazel,” she told him.
