Your imitation is the lowest form of flattery

When she tuned back in, it was a nice change of pace to note that Connor actually wasn’t being all Muggle-phobic or Eurocentric Magick-centric or whatever (he was technically European so ‘Eurocentric’ might apply too, but considering he and Claudia were still stuck to each other this year she was willing to bet he would only be anti-American when the Americans were Muggles, so magical heritage superseded ethnicity). Nope, instead he was being willfully ignorant and acting all self-righteous, claiming that he hadn’t said anything about gender, as if she was just making this all up.

“You brought it up,” Marley pointed out, unable to hold back an eyeroll. She was Prefect and trying to demonstrate maturity for those of her fellow prefects who didn’t take their job seriously, but she wasn’t perfect. Although ‘perfect’ and ‘Prefect’ were spelled a little too close for comfort. “Literally the whole point of cooties is that Muggle kids exaggerate--” she placed a deliberate emphasis on the word, because Connor had used it and it was dumb but convenient right now “--how girls and boys are soooo different that they even have different types of germs. But I guess Pureblood kids are too good for that. Probably because they’re smarter and know more about science and understand that there’s very few differences between sexes and genders.” Okay, she probably didn’t need to add that part in, and she also probably didn’t need to make it sound so sarcastic, but she really couldn’t resist. There were some Purebloods who weren’t all focused on hierarchy garbage, but there were more who were, at least as far as her over-fifteen years of life experience had taught her, or maybe over-ten was more accurate since her earliest memory was from the age of, like, four. “Wasn’t that what you meant when you were talking down about Muggle kiddie games, that they’re--”

Then Connor interrupted her. Being interrupted was not something the dark-skinned Canadian appreciated, at all, but at following his hand-wave to his potato, which was clearly twitching in the coals, she decided this was a valid interruption. Not forgivable, because it was Connor and ugh. But valid. “Oh, yeah,” she nodded vaguely, and put her years in the Drama Club to use to improvise, “some potatoes move more when they’re cooking. It depends on the type of potato. And maybe on how they’re grown, too. I’ve never grown potatoes in magic dirt with magic sun and all that, but I’ll double check with Myffi. Be right back!” Standing up, she began walking in the direction she’d last seen Myffi, internally congratulating herself on her quick thinking. She had a reason to leave, so she definitely wouldn’t get caught in the spud-splosion, and Connor would probably stay because he probably wouldn’t want to follow her, so he would get spudded, and hah.

Except Marley hadn’t gotten more than part-way around the fire when she clued in to how Myffi had… company… Great. Like, great for Myffi, if a little disappointing because Leo was cute in a gnarly old tree kind of way, but that was fine because she was dating Teal so who cared about boys, but also sarcastic-great. What was she supposed to do now?

Except then she heard a loud noise behind her, and jumped, and turned to check, and promptly had to bite her tongue to keep from laughing at the look on Connor’s face. The tongue-bite was a bit too hard and made her eyes widen and water, but that was fine because she was pretending not to have known this was totally gonna happen all along. Because, yup, it was happening. It was spud-splosion time!

It wasn’t unusual for Connor to be confused when talking to Marley because she often said things that didn’t make sense. Usually they could be tied back to the conversation as a whole, though, which... more

      • All right, the potato was apparently supposed to do that, according to Marley. Although Marley didn’t seem as though she were particularly sure, as she scampered off to see Myffi and check, leaving... more
